The Nutshell
Coach G was willing
to allow one game where her team didn't match the intensity of their
opponent but still got the win. Two games in a row is another matter.
Duke was sloppy in their second win of the season over an inspired
Virginia Tech squad, falling behind by as much as 11 points in the first
half. The Devils had to bring out a full court press in order to pull off
a 24-7 run to end the half, playing with the cohesion they had lacked for
the first twelve minutes of the game. Duke quickly broke out to a
double-digit lead in the second half, but repeatedly allowed the Hokies
back into the game thanks to careless turnovers, poor defensive rotations
and an obvious decrease in intensity. The Hokies got as close as 69-61
with under four minutes left before Alison Bales had 2 key stickbacks to
put the game away. Bales redeemed herself after a mediocre effort against
VPI's 6-6 center Nare Diaware in Blacksburg with 17 point, 11 rebounds and
5 blocks. Lindsey Harding had 3 turnovers to just 2 assists (a rarity)
but came up with several key scoring spurts to score 15, while Abby Waner
led Duke with 18 points, many of them at the foul line. VPI shot 49% for
the game, by far Duke's worst effort of the year. Duke got to the foul
line 23 times and had 20 points off 15 offensive rebounds. Those wound up
being the biggest keys to the win, one that Coach G said felt like a loss.
