The Nutshell:
Duke threw a mighty 19-0 haymaker to start out the game in Knoxville and
survived an inspired comeback from Tennessee to earn a big win. The
Devils were led by its backcourt of Lindsey Harding, Wanisha Smith and
Abby Waner. Waner had 21 points in the first half, nailing shots from way
beyond the three point arc. Smith had 13 points in the second half,
steadying Duke after Tennessee made its comeback. Harding was clutch
throughout the game, dominating her individual matchup and making huge
plays down the stretch. Tennessee came back from 21 down to tie the game
at 48 in the second half, but they never managed to take the lead. Their
27 offensive rebounds kept them in the game despite poor shooting, but the
otherworldly talent of Candace Parker (22 points, 10 rebounds) and
inspired play of Alexis Hornbuckle (19 points) wasn't enough to top a Duke
squad that possesses an astonishing amount of mental toughness. Even when
the Lady Vols started hitting ridiculous shots, Duke never cracked and
calmly ran their offense in the face of a loud crowd and the most intense
defense they've faced to date. This game may have seeding implications
down the line, but right now it's another solid road win against a top-5
team that almost never loses at home.
