Game Recap

It's hard to say much about Duke's beating of Maine. The Black Bears were outgunned in every phase of the game, including effort. The only minor pregame bit of interest--Joanne McCallie reuniting with her former player, Cindy Blodgett, who now coaches Maine--was pretty much glossed over by both coaches after the game. (One funny note: Blodgett referred to her old mentor as "Coach Palumbo", McCallie's maiden name.) This was hardly a perfect game for Duke. The team committed 22 turnovers against very little pressure. Many of them were entirely unforced. The team had trouble differentiating intense defense from fouls at times, piling up 20 whistles. Duke did not shoot well in the first half, though they did make up for it with their assault on the offensive boards (13 second chance points).

This game was mostly a chance to work on a few leftover concerns from the Oklahoma State game as well as an opportunity to test Duke's bench. The starters only played 84 out of a possible 200 minutes and the bench acquitted itself well, scoring 49 points and grabbing 36 rebounds. The freshmen in particular had some fine moments, especially in the second half. To start the game off, Maine had trouble holding onto the ball, with 15 turnovers in the first eleven minutes. The Black Bears had just 1 field goal in the first twelve minutes of the game, and that was a stickback. Meanwhile, Abby Waner drained her first trey of the game and Duke went up by double digits just five minutes in. Chante Black scored her 1,000th career point on a pass from Waner into the post, while Carrem Gay was menacing the passing lanes with 3 quick steals. By the time Maine had scored their second field goal, the Devils were up 24-3. The Devils had already reached into their bench with Keturah Jackson and Krystal Thomas getting effective minutes.

After Maine pulled within 29-9, the Devils went on a grueling 13-0 run that put the game away. Much of it came from aggressive play on the part of Chelsea Hopkins, who scored 6 straight points on free throws. At the half, the Devils had a 23-6 edge on points off turnovers and a 13-3 advantage in second chance points. Maine shot just 20% and couldn't keep Duke off the foul line (16-20). Duke wasn't what I would call entirely sharp, but the effort was there no matter the score.

The Devils looked much sharper to start the second half, breaking off a 10-0 run. Black and Joy Cheek combined for 8 points as Duke was moving the ball around with great ease. Carrem Gay hit her first career three shortly thereafter. No starter played more than ten minutes in the second half, and Black was out there for just seven. Coach McCallie was using a number of different combinations from her bench, along with employing certain reserves with the starters to see how they'd react. It wasn't always smooth sailing with the reserves as they piled up 12 fouls and 13 turnovers, but their effort also resulted in 9 steals, 4 blocks and an unselfish 11 assists. All told, Duke had an impressive 44-15 edge in points off turnovers and 27-4 bulge in second chance points.

The crowd for this game was announced at 5,480, but this was a very generous estimate and included tickets sold rather than actual bodies in the seats. Some fans perhaps didn't want to attend a men's/women's doubleheader, as there was a men's game in Cameron at 4:30pm, though men's ticketholders were offered free admission to this game. Duke doesn't play again at home for nearly three weeks, so one would hope that interested parties would be more eager to see them play at that time.
