The Nutshell

Duke bounced back against an overmatched Southern team to salvage a win in the DePaul Invitational. The Devils started the game on a 23-2 run in the first nine minutes of the game and pushed the lead over 30 with four minutes to go in the half. From there, liberal substitutions were made as Duke emptied out its bench. Abby Waner bounced back from one of the worst offensive games of her career against Hartford to score 24 points, including 4 threes. Joy Cheek also bounced back from a poor performance with 15 points and 5 boards. Cheek actually came off the bench as coach McCallie shook up the starting lineup by inserting Keturah Jackson as part of a three guard set.

Southern simply didn't have the size or personnel to match up with Duke. The Devils forced 15 steals and converted turnovers into an impressive 32 points. The Devils were able to run against the Jaguars, racking up 14 fast break points. Duke had turnover problems of its own, though the freshmen did account for 10 of Duke's 18 turnovers. Still, both Hopkins and Shelby had their moments. Selby had 4 points, including some scores during a key first-half stretch when Duke was taking over the game. On the other hand, she had 4 fouls and 4 turnovers, clear signs that she's having growing pains vis-a-vis her adapting to Duke's team concept. Hopkins was 3-3 from the field with 8 points and 3 steals. She didn't have a single assist, which was surprising, especially against 2 turnovers. Still, she continues to add energy off the bench.

All told, it was a very good thing that Duke had to come out and immediately played another game after laying an egg against Hartford. It would have been more beneficial to play a stronger opponent, but so it goes. Duke will now wait six days before going on the road to play another dangerous mid-major program, Western Kentucky. They'll need to be much more assertive and cohesive at both ends if they wish to avoid a similar kind of game to their Hartford loss.
