The Nutshell

The outcomes of basketball games often rely heavily on matchups and styles of play. That's exactly how a Georgia Tech team who outmuscled UNC for a major upset was blown off the court a few days later by Duke. The Jackets are an intensely physical, athletic team that presses for 40 minutes. That combination of quickness and power hurt a UNC club that is not a great rebounding group this year. On the other hand, Georgia Tech's lack of a true low-post scorer and assist-creating point guard meant that they would have trouble exploiting Duke's weaknesses. And while the Devils certainly have flaws, dealing with physical play certainly isn't one of them. In the decisive first half, Duke held the Jackets to 4-22 shooting (18% - a season best) and forced 16 turnovers. Meanwhile, the Devils had some problems with turnovers as well (13 in the half), but built up a lead thanks to jump shots from Keturah Jackson and Abby Waner. Within the game's first few minutes, Duke built a 10-point lead and either held it steady or slowly built on it. Tech had a brief flurry in the second half that made the game seem a lot closer than it actually was, but Duke's veterans got a couple of key scores and order was restored. This was a quality win for Duke after some recent lackluster efforts, and sets up a showdown for first place in the ACC in Tallahassee against Florida State on January 29th.
