After trailing Duke by two at halftime, Maryland used a second half surge to down the Blue Devils by 18. Kristi Toliver was on fire from the field, hitting seven of thirteen three point attempts and leading all scorers with 34. Marissa Coleman added 24 of her own, with the Maryland duo's total exceeding the entire Duke team until the last basket was scored. With the loss to Maryland, Duke assured itself of losing out on the ACC's top seed in its tournament. Interestingly, this is shaping up to be the first year since 1990 where a team other than Duke, UNC or Virginia has finished in first place. With the win, the Terps have put themselves in position to actually win the league, something they have yet to do under Brenda Frese. The Terps have two fairly easy ACC games left, while FSU has to grapple with Virginia (a team on the upswing after some recent struggles) and Wake Forest on the road (a team desperate to keep their postseason hopes alive). Maryland owns tiebreakers with FSU and UNC and Duke lost their tiebreaker advantage with the Terps, and of course FSU owns the tiebreaker over Duke. |
