The Nutshell

The essential set of stats to take away from Duke's demolition of Virginia in the ACC quarterfinals is this: 21 points, 7-29 shooting, 12 turnovers. That was the combined line of the ACC's top scorers in Lyndra Littles and Monica Wright. Normally, they combine for 43 ppg. Duke's swarming defense zeroed in on the more active Wright and forced her into early mistakes and kept the ball out of the hands of the more passive Littles. Meanwhile, Duke could do no wrong on the offensive end as Duke hit a stunning 8-13 from three - an echo of Florida State's 11-18 outburst in the game immediately prior. Chante Black was dominant at both ends in the first half and the rest of the frontcourt also had a big impact. Duke broke out to an 17-2 lead and kept building on it, including a 19-2 run in which six different Blue Devils scored. While Virginia did cut a 20+ point lead to 12 early in the second half, Joy Cheek responded by ripping off a solo 8-0 run. Abby Waner capped the 11-0 Duke run with a trey that brought the Duke faithful to a frenzy and removed all doubt of the outcome. While the Hoos did not match up well with Duke at all, it was still encouraging to see focus and intensity from this team. They neutralized two of the biggest scoring guns in the country and made sure no one else would step up in their place. Even with some lapses of concentration at both ends after they had picked up a big lead (most typically during stretches where the starters were being rested), this was still one of the best all-around showings this year from Duke. Coming off her dramatic game winner against UNC Abby Waner rediscovered her range in Greensboro, shooting 6-9 (4-6 3FG) to lead all scorers with 18.

Duke advanced to its 15th straight ACC semifinal and earned their 16th consecutive win over Virginia. At one time, the Hoos dominated the series to such an extent that it was surprising to see Duke staying within 20 points of their foes. This game was an example of the immovable object beating the irresistible force. Florida State will provide a much tougher challenge at 3:30 tomorrow, the nightcap to the UNC/Maryland clash.

We'll have more Saturday morning including an uncaptioned photo gallery (if technology cooperates...)
