Chante Black

This was actually one of Chante's best games of the year, even given the relatively modest numbers of 12 points and 6 rebounds. She torched Virginia in the early going, using her superior quickness to get past Mohammed and get all sorts of great looks. Black had an attacking mindset and her teammates did a great job of getting her the ball in quick scoring position. Virginia tried to double-team her at times, but Black also did a nice job of moving quickly with the ball--either scoring immediately or else passing it back out.

Carrem Gay

Carrem scored the opening basket but was otherwise quiet. She did have several nice entry passes to Black, with that kind of high-low action proving tough to defend for Virginia.

Bridgette Mitchell

Bridgette was instrumental in Duke's initial scoring push, netting 5 quick points. She also moved the ball around well, though she did shuffle her feet a few times for turnovers. Mitchell was her usual energetic self on the offensive glass.

Abby Waner

This was one of Abby's best shooting games in a long, long time. One can remember why she takes so many long shots--there was a time when she used to drain such shots with regularity. Against Virginia, Abby took on the sort of role she had back in 2007: a sweet-shooting guard who stretched defenses and single-handedly deflated opponents with big shots. She killed rallies in this game, quickly extended leads and hit shots at the buzzer. It's as though that three she hit at the end of the UNC game opened the floodgates for her and she stopped thinking about her shot so much. If Duke would run a few more plays setting her up for open shots, she could be a huge weapon down the stretch.

Jasmine Thomas

A quiet game for Jaz. After that big three she hit early in the game, she wasn't able to convert on drives or jumpers. Instead, she was content to get the ball inside and pressure the ball. Foul trouble contributed in part to her perhaps losing momentum.

Karima Christmas

Karima was another player who had her own personal run. For her, it was a jumper and pull-up three that put the pressure on Virginia in the second half. Throwing a physical player like Karima at UVa really hurt them; they weren't ready for how aggressive she is.

Joy Cheek

Cheek was certainly Duke's MVP on the night. After a few games where she seemed a step slow and couldn't finish, Joy stepped up in a big way when her team needed her the most. With the rest of her teammates struggling in the early moments of the second half, Joy used the traits that should make her a match-up problem to go on an 8-0 run of her own. She was driving, posting up and shooting from long range--and she looked smoother and more comfortable doing in than I've seen in a while. If she can consistently provide this kind of effort off the bench, then Duke's postseason chances will be considerably brighter.

Keturah Jackson

This was KJ at her best: running, hustling, getting steals and finishing. She was energetic and efficient, two qualities that haven't always intersected for her (or the team) this season. That one segment where she scored after turnover, then stole the ball again and scored, really broke Virginia's will for a few minutes. This game was such where one player for Duke took over for a few minutes at a time, and then another teammate would take over. That "attack in waves" approach was quite the opposite from Virginia's 1-2 punch of Wright and Littles, but it worked to keep Virginia off-balance.

Krystal Thomas

TOT1772-20-03-300-1-11022

Other than turning the ball over twice in the last minute of the first half, this was a strong showing for Krystal. She hit a tough shot and later was fouled hitting a hook shot. Thomas was a tough load for UVa to deal with on top of trying to contend with Black. Krystal was physical and kept things simple, doing her work on the block.

Chelsea Hopkins

Chelsea got some more valuable minutes running the team, but still hasn't quite clicked all the way in as of yet. She experienced ACC Basketball at full speed during the Hoos 8-0 run to close the first half. She was called for charging at the end of the game and had another turnover. She did sink a couple of free throws and pressured the ball nicely. Any extended minutes Duke can get for her are a bonus.

Kathleen Scheer

Kathleen came on towards the end of the game and had a nice blocked shot and a steal.

Shay Selby

Shay just got a spot minute at the end of the game when the benches cleared - her ankle is still not 100%.
