THE NUTSHELL: Jasmine Thomas Scores 29 While Defense Stymies OSU

Jasmine Thomas keyed the Duke upset

A career high 27 points by Jasmine Thomas including 22 in the pivotal second half lifted #11 Duke (6-1) to an 83-67 victory over #3 Ohio State tonight in Cameron Indoor Stadium. "Everybody just rose to the occasion, but the second half was just more aggressive," said Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie after the victory. "I was proud of our defense and rebounding, and how Jasmine [at the point] handled the balance of attack and changes in tempo." It was apropos that Duke legend Lindsey Harding was in the house as Thomas' performance was reminiscent of Harding's outstanding senior year. The good decision making was contagious, with just 11 Blue Devil miscues overall.

Freshman Allison Vernerey was Duke's leading scorer in the first half, providing a huge boost after entering the game for an injured Joy Cheek (who returned in the second half). Duke's offense shot a blistering 57% from the field in the second half, but their defense after halftime was also outstanding, outrebounding the Buckeyes 22-17 after a first half rebounding deficit. Krystal Thomas led Duke with 13 boards overall while Vernerey added eight. "I think we're getting better on the boards but have a ways to go, because we're going to play better rebounding teams," said McCallie.

Duke returns to Cameron next Sunday to face USC.
