THE NUTSHELL: Rebounding, Pressing, and Cheek Career High Were Enough

Joy Cheek matched her jersey
by scoring a career-high 21

On a snowy night in Durham, Duke's one-two punches were solid rebounding and a stifling press, helping the Devils wear down James Madison and hold on for a 14 point win. Krystal and Jasmine Thomas each had double-digit rebound totals and Joy Cheek scored a career high 21 points, but those numbers perhaps paled to the 31 point outburst from JMU's Dawn Evans. Evans wasn't at full strength after missing court time for a kidney biopsy, but her shooting didn't show it. She drained 6-13 treys, remarkable as many of her rainbows were from a range reminiscent of Abby Waner, or even Chris Collins.

A solid Duke press was crucial down the stretch as the Blue Devils' late shooting was nearly as frigid as the weather outside. A Shay Selby layup with 8:40 remaining was their field goal and past that point Duke missed a whopping 11 free throws. "I loved our rebounding and we shot a lot of free throws...maybe next time we'll put them in," Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie half-joked. "Our defense made up for our poor free throw shooing down the stretch, but sometimes that's the way the game breaks, and you've got to control a game no matter how it it breaks." The Dukes are a talented and well-coached team, but didn't quite have the size or depth to break Duke's press at the end of a 40 minute battle. "They had too many weapons that played well on the same night,'" said JMU eighth year Head Coach Kenny Brooks, who also played college ball for Lefty Driesell there. "Duke made some great shots that we hoped they were going to miss, and when they did missed they got the rebound." In the end Duke perhaps bent but didn't break, and notched another yet another quality non-conference win at home.
