A funny thing happened on the way to the big blowout. After a 26-2 Duke first half run gave the Devils a 35-15 halftime lead, Wake Forest responded by outscoring Duke by six in the second half. "For 28 minutes we played great, but for 12 minutes we looked like we'd never met one another," said Wake Forest Head Coach Mike Petersen of two huge Duke runs. The Deacs led 9-8 at the 11:14 mark when Bridgette Mitchell, Duke's standout with 20 points and nine boards, nailed a three pointer that started the huge first half Blue Devil run. "We didn't do very well in the second half," said Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie, whose team has now held two consecutive opponents to just five first half field goals. "Wake is a much improved team from last year." Mitchell had seven of Duke's 22 offensive boards (exceeding Wake's 19 defensive boards) and hit another momentum shifting three with 9:10 remaining, just as Wake had cut Duke's lead to 14. "[Duke] disrupts you more than anything else," said Petersen. "We got a lot of good shots but you can't come on the road against the 6th ranked team and go 2-8 on the line in the first half...you donate 10 points - they don't need donations!" Duke's next opponent is Katie Meier's homestanding Miami Hurricanes, a team that upset #11 Florida State in Coral Gables today. |
