There are any number of ways to describe Duke's 1-point victory against Maryland. A shot-selection fiasco. A gritty, determined win over a program that rarely loses at home. A series of lapses on defense and rebounding. A series of clutch shots and free throws. A stunning performance by Jasmine Thomas. A shocking lack of balance on offense for Duke. In the end, it's a win that made Duke 5-0 in the lead (still a game ahead of Florida State) and gave the Devils their third ACC road victory of the year. Duke forced the young Terps into multiple turnovers early in the game, but couldn't capitalize on the offensive end. The Devils staked a small lead in the first half thanks to 6 late points by Allison Vernerey, and then seemed to take over the game with an 11-point second-half lead when Jasmine Thomas scored 13 straight points. Duke let the Terps back in with back-to-back threes by Lori Bjork as the Devils went nearly seven minutes with only 2 points. Finally, Bridgette Mitchell saved the team with a crazy turnaround jumper with 1:26 left that put Duke back on top. Joy Cheek and Jasmine Thomas hit some clutch free throws as Duke won for the first time in College Park since 2007. In the end, it was Duke's physical play that won the day for them as the team is struggling to score in game after game. |
