THE NUTSHELL

Duke's stifling defense and a 20-2 opening outburst neutralized a usually potent Florida State squad as the Blue Devils rolled to a 30 point win on a snowy night in Durham. Jasmine Thomas led Duke with 23 points on a stellar shooting night (9-15 FG, 4-5 3FG, 18 in the second half) and Krystal Thomas double-double helped Duke to a 51-30 rebounding edge. "Jasmine is a special player and truly dangerous," said Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie. "I'm not sure I've ever coached a more focused player than Jasmine. I'm very pleased about the rebounding, 51-30 against a team of such quality." The Noles tried to make it a game in the second half, chipping down a 25 point Duke lead to just 15 with 6:09 to play. But back to back hoops from Jasmine sparked a 12-0 Duke run while the Blue Devil defenders kept FSU fromm the score to just 53-38 with just 6:21 to play, but Duke scored 20 of the last 25 points to win going away. "We just got handled by a team that was more athletic and played harder. That's really all I have to say," said FSU Head Coach Sue Semrau. Allison Vernerey was in double figures for the seventh time in her Duke career while Joy Cheek became the 25th Duke player to score 1,000 points. But more importantly, Joy asserted herself in the paint, grabbing nine rebounds to go along with her nine points. Only Courtney Ward cracked double figures for State who fell to 18-4 (4-2 ACC) two games behind Duke (18-3, 6-0 ACC) in the conference standings. "It was a great team game with everybody playing with so much energy and focus, especially on defense," continued McCallie. Duke gets almost a full week off before travelling to Chestnut Hill to face BC on February 4th, while the Noles stick around in the Triangle for a Monday night date with the Tar Heels.
