Duke's defense continued its rampage through the ACC, holding NC State to just six field goals in each half en route to a 70-39 victory tonight in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Allison Vernerey posted a 20 and 10 night on 9-13 shooting, with seven of her boards on the offensive end. When asked about her shot, Vernerey said, "I feel more confident, that's it, I have confidence around me and that gives me confidence to shoot the ball." Joy Cheek also had 10 boards as Duke's rebounding margin over the much shorter Wolfpack squad was +20. "They were relentless on the boards, they did a great job of denying us second shots, said NC State Head Coach Kellie Harper. "This is the most aggressive defense we've seen all season." Despite a 33-16 halftime Blue Devil lead, Duke could have done a lot more. "We got lit up a little at halftime for our first half effort," said Cheek. "We didn't do terrible, but in the second half we knew we could play like in the last game," referring to Duke's Monday night beatdown of UNC. The Tar Heels continued their February slump, falling to 4-5 in the ACC with a 69-62 home loss to now fifth place Boston College. While Vernerey was the only starter to score in double figures, Shay Selby and Bridgette Mitchell came off the bench to each score ten points. Marissa Kastanek was the only NC State player in double figures, scoring 14 points but committing seven turnovers. Duke improves to 8-1 in the ACC, remaining one game ahead of 7-2 FSU heading into a Sunday rematch at Virginia Tech.
