Duke won their sixth ACC title, 70-60, doing it their way: with defense and rebounding. Behind their own version of the Big Three, the Devils pulled away from the undersized but plucky Wolfpack with a 12-2 run early that gave the Devils a 15 point lead and enough of a working margin to hold off NC State. Tournament MVP Jasmine Thomas had 18 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. First team All-Tournament Joy Cheek had 11 points and 7 rebounds, while fellow all-tourney member Karima Christmas chipped in 13 points and 4 steals. This trio combined for 13 of the 15 points that served to give State too great a deficit to overcome. That said, every player contributed something in this game. All ten players who got in for Duke scored, and there was no such thing as a garbage point in this game. For State, playing their fourth game in four days, Nikitta Gartrell continued her brilliant run in the tourney with 19 points and 7 rebounds, while tough forward Bonae Holston had 14 points and 6 rebounds. A big key to the win for Duke was controlling star State guard Marissa Kastanek, who was hounded into 1-6 shooting and 7 turnovers. Duke owned the boards, 46-32, forced 23 turnovers contained State from long range until the very end of the game. Duke was an impressive 47% from three themselves, which helped offset poor shooting in general. Duke simply did what it does: apply a lot of pressure, get physical, make tough shots when it counts and stay tough mentally down the stretch. The players were overjoyed after the game, dancing around the endless stream of balloons, with seniors Cheek, Keturah Jackson and Bridgette Mitchell looking particularly happy. In a topsy-turvy ACC tournament, Duke restored order. |
