Duke's 82-55 victory over Western Kentucky was the epitome of "routine early-season win". Duke played well in spurts but had breakdowns at both ends of the floor. The Devils made mistakes in pursuit of a particular team goal (speeding up the offense), which coach McCallie said that she was OK with. Ten players got double-digit minutes as Coach P tried a number of different combinations. The Lady Toppers hung tough in the first half as they were able to break Duke's press on several occasions. A late first half switch to zone sparked a 23-5 run that turned a 10 point lead into a blowout game. The Devils were led by Haley Peters' opportunistic 17 points, an efficient 16 from Jasmine Thomas and 10 from a constantly hustling Kathleen Scheer. Duke shot over 50% for the second straight game and had more assists (23) than turnovers (21). This was a solid win over a decent team missing its best player, one that should challenge in the Sun Belt.
