THE NUTSHELL: Devils Win Decides ACC-BigTen Challenge

Chelsea Gray made key plays down the stretch to help Duke pull away as the Devils defeated Wisconsin 59-51 tonight in Madison. The victory not only clinched the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, but helped Duke complete a perfect 4-0 road trip, improving to 8-0 overall. At the end of such a tough stretch away from home it was easy for the Blue Devils to be lured into playing along with Wisconsin's deliberate style. While it didn't help that Duke had an abysmal shooting night - just 20-60 from the floor - the answers came in the hustle stats. Duke outrebounded Wisconsin 45-30 (including 20 offensive boards) and turned 21 Badger turnovers into a whopping 26 points. 15 of those turnovers were Duke steals, and true to form the opponent paid for live ball miscues. Karima Christmas had 5 of those steals, providing key plays along with Gray and Krystal Thomas around the four minute mark. Wisconsin had closed the score to 44-40, but a series of Duke steals and scores pushed the advantage to 52-41, enough of a working margin for the Devils to close it out. Even on a night when few shots were falling and calls weren't going their way, Duke found a way to win -- a fact that bodes well for this team. While Wisconsin star Alyssa Karel scored 14 and Taylor Wurtz bombed away for 19, Jasmine Thomas found her outside range for 14 and Gray added 13 in just 24 minutes. Wisconsin had zero bench points to Duke's 33, with fresh legs making a difference in the rebounding battle. Duke will need that depth next Monday as #7 Texas A&M comes to Cameron.
