Despite rubbery legs from their showdown with Kentucky, Duke sucked it up and
made all the plays when it counted against Maryland. The young Terps, a team
that features no seniors, looked fresher and hungrier to start out the game and
hung an 18-2 run on the Devils. Maryland used a zone that Duke did not attack,
and as a result the Devils were one-and-done on offense. Defensively, Duke
lost Terp shooter Kim Rodgers several times and had tired legs in transition.
When the Terps took a 10-point lead, Duke buckled down and started doing the
hard work of a comeback: getting steals, getting points in the post and making
connecting plays. The Devils trailed at the half by just 4 and battled back to
take some slim leads in the second half. Jasmine Thomas proved just how clutch
she was by hitting a three with under two minutes left that gave Duke a lead it
would never relinquish and then hit an off-balance runner with a minute left to
give Duke a 3-point lead. From there, Duke's defense harassed the Terps into 2
turnovers which led to breakaway layups for Chelsea Gray.
Duke wound up out-rebounding the Terps after losing the board battle in the
first half. The Devils forced 19 turnovers, including 4 steals. The frontline
of Lynetta Kizer and Tianna Hawkins shot just 5-15 with 5 rebounds, while
Krystal Thomas had 8 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Duke's frosh all made
key plays, with Haley Peters experiencing a much-needed revival, Tricia Liston
hitting key shots, Chloe Wells coming up with steals and assists and Chelsea
Gray doing a little of everything. Duke now gets a week off before facing
Florida State.
