Duke Starters

Krystal's play has really picked up since the woeful Kentucky game. She scored 7 of Duke's last 12 points as she muscled and finessed her way to the basket. Her over-the-shoulder shot was impressive, and the free throw she hit with 4:13 left was clutch. She played with a lot of energy down the stretch as she got boards, played defense and looked to attack the basket. Without her stepping up inside, Duke could not have won.

Haley Peters

Haley missed a couple of easy shots to start the game, and it seemed to shake her confidence. She was surprisingly unproductive against the small but feisty State front line and was largely supplanted by Scheer in this game.

Rima's play was frustrating for large portions of the game. She missed several easy shots, was turning the ball over on charges and travels, and was an awful 1-4 from the foul line. That said, she had several key defensive plays (including a couple of forced jump balls) and drained a crucial jump shot during Duke's big run at the end. At some point, Duke has to get a more consistent offensive showing from her.

Jasmine Thomas

Jasmine was just 2-6 at the half and finished 3-7 from the foul line. None of that mattered, because when her team needed her, she stepped up, as she has all season. She kicked off Duke's final 28-9 run with a 10' jumper, hit a foul shot and sank a huge three that cut the deficit to 2 points with 3:21 left. It wasn't a brilliant game overall for her, especially when one considers how well's played of late, but she simply helped to get the job done and gladly accepted help when it became available.

Chelsea Gray

Chelsea made her mark in the first half with a scoop shot and a finish on a cut, but she wasn't doing the little things yet that really helped her team. In the second half, there was more of that: more rebounds, more steals, and a dish to Krystal. Defensively, she forced a couple of jump balls and seemed to give White fits with her size. She also proved impossible for State to stop, since she hit a huge three (which opened up passing lanes) and then carved up State off the dribble. She hit a ridiculous scoop shot that somehow went in, drained a three that she needed to take and of course came up with the game-winning shot. Another day at the office for the Closer--although perhaps a bit too close for comfort.

Tricia Liston

This was not one of Tricia's high-impact games, though she did have a few good plays. Her three point play on a drive was a big-time play, especially after State had just gone up again by 15. Her pass to Gray on a cut was also beautiful. In general, she didn't match the energy and efficiency of State for much of the game and missed some defensive assignments. Still, she had some positive moments and I don't anticipate this game hurting her development.

Allison Vernerey

Alli was really getting pushed around by State's defenders, but she did have a stickback and finished on a high-low. Most importantly, she gave K.Thomas much-needed rest without taking anything away from the defense.

Chloe Wells

Chloe came up with a fantastic steal as she flicked her hands out at a ballhandler and whipped the ball to herself. Her drive for a score helped put State back on its heels just a bit, even if it wasn't part of the full-steam comeback later in the game.

Kathleen Scheer

This was Leener's best game in weeks, as she hit key shots (one on the run and another on a turnaround), baffled State's offense with her size and quick hands (3 steals) and came up with tough rebounds. She also blocked shots (grabbing the rebound on one of them) and found Selby & Vernerey inside for easy scores. To her enormous credit, she stepped up and was ready for extensive minutes in this game. Maintaining that sort of preparation in the face of more limited playing time speaks to her maturity, and Coach McCallie made a special point of mentioning this in the press conference.

Shay Selby

Selby was perhaps the most valuable player in the game for Duke and a big reason why was attitude. She was the only Duke player who looked aggressive and confident when she came onto the floor. Her eyes were focused and intense, but she ran with a certain swagger. As Duke made their comeback, she was a big part of it: hitting a jumper and 3 early in the second half, several steals, a dish to Jasmine for big-time three, a step-back jumper from long range and countless floor burns from digging out rebounds. Doing it while scoring just 8 points in her last 5 games speaks to what she's capable of. Duke would love to see performances of this level from Shay in every game, because I'm guessing they would like to have an experienced player on the floor more often than not.
