She scored 7 of Duke's last 12 points as she muscled and finessed her way to
the basket. Her over-the-shoulder shot was impressive, and the free throw she
hit with 4:13 left was clutch. She played with a lot of energy down the
stretch as she got boards, played defense and looked to attack the basket.
Without her stepping up inside, Duke could not have won. |

shake her confidence. She was surprisingly unproductive against the small but
feisty State front line and was largely supplanted by Scheer in this game. |

She
missed several easy shots, was turning the ball over on charges and travels,
and was an awful 1-4 from the foul line. That said, she had several key
defensive plays (including a couple of forced jump balls) and drained a crucial
jump shot during Duke's big run at the end. At some point, Duke has to get a
more consistent offensive showing from her. |

None of that mattered, because when her team needed her, she stepped up, as she
has all season. She kicked off Duke's final 28-9 run with a 10' jumper, hit a
foul shot and sank a huge three that cut the deficit to 2 points with 3:21
left. It wasn't a brilliant game overall for her, especially when one
considers how well's played of late, but she simply helped to get the job done
and gladly accepted help when it became available. |

a cut, but she wasn't doing the little things yet that really helped her team.
In the second half, there was more of that: more rebounds, more steals, and a
dish to Krystal. Defensively, she forced a couple of jump balls and seemed to
give White fits with her size. She also proved impossible for State to stop,
since she hit a huge three (which opened up passing lanes) and then carved up
State off the dribble. She hit a ridiculous scoop shot that somehow went in,
drained a three that she needed to take and of course came up with the
game-winning shot. Another day at the office for the Closer--although perhaps
a bit too close for comfort. |

few good plays. Her three point play on a drive was a big-time play,
especially after State had just gone up again by 15. Her pass to Gray on a cut
was also beautiful. In general, she didn't match the energy and efficiency of
State for much of the game and missed some defensive assignments. Still, she
had some positive moments and I don't anticipate this game hurting her
development. |

did have a stickback and finished on a high-low. Most importantly, she gave
K.Thomas much-needed rest without taking anything away from the defense. |

ballhandler and whipped the ball to herself. Her drive for a score helped put
State back on its heels just a bit, even if it wasn't part of the full-steam
comeback later in the game. |

run and another on a turnaround), baffled State's offense with her size and
quick hands (3 steals) and came up with tough rebounds. She also blocked shots
(grabbing the rebound on one of them) and found Selby & Vernerey inside for easy
scores. To her enormous credit, she stepped up and was ready for extensive
minutes in this game. Maintaining that sort of preparation in the face of more
limited playing time speaks to her maturity, and Coach McCallie made a special
point of mentioning this in the press conference. |

reason why was attitude. She was the only Duke player who looked aggressive and
confident when she came onto the floor. Her eyes were focused and intense, but
she ran with a certain swagger. As Duke made their comeback, she was a big
part of it: hitting a jumper and 3 early in the second half, several steals, a
dish to Jasmine for big-time three, a step-back jumper from long range and
countless floor burns from digging out rebounds. Doing it while scoring just 8
points in her last 5 games speaks to what she's capable of. Duke would love to
see performances of this level from Shay in every game, because I'm guessing
they would like to have an experienced player on the floor more often than not. |
