THE NUTSHELL: Duke Dominates the Paint, Takes Two Game ACC Lead

For Duke, the best defense really is a good offense. Working hard against an aggressive Miami defense that pressed and trapped for much of the game, Duke did a fine job of connecting passes and getting easy looks, not just good looks. The Devils broke Miami's press while overcoming serious foul trouble for Jasmine Thomas as they went on a 15-2 first half run that pushed the lead into double digits. Duke had its chances to knock Miami out but squandered them a few times, allowing the Canes to pull within 11 at half and 9 with fifteen minutes left. Karima Christmas, scoring in double figures for the first time since December 30th, imposed her will on a foul-plagued Miami frontline and scored 3 straight baskets to put the game out of reach. Duke's frosh combined for 45 points, including 15 by Haley Peters and 13 from Richa Jackson, who made her first career start. Duke took advantage of Miami's small and thin frontline to the tune of a 58-16 edge in points in the paint and a 37-6 advantage in bench points. Duke held Miami 23 points under its season average as the offensive pressure they applied forced Miami to exert a lot of energy. Eventually, they ran out of gas as their bench did little to help and Duke stretched the lead to as many as 27 points. The win gave Duke a two-game lead over the nearest competitor in the ACC, setting up a huge Monday night showdown with UNC.
