Duke Starters

Krystal Thomas

Krystal had one basket inside and was otherwise ineffective on offense. Waltiea Rolle was able to bottle her up effectively while battling Krystal to a standstill on the boards (11 for Krystal, 9 for Rolle). A lot of this was by design; as I predicted, UNC double-teamed Krystal every time she touched the ball. She was able to find Jasmine once for a basket but otherwise didn't move the ball that quickly when she was double-teamed. Coach McCallie called her and Karima out for "not showing up".

Haley Peters

Haley got the start but was battered by the more experienced and physical Carolina frontline. She did hit a big second-half basket that briefly put Duke in the lead, but she was mostly yanked for more physical teammates.

Richa Jackson

In this game Richa learned that being confident in one's shot isn't always a good thing. She was 0-8 from the floor, with almost all of them jump shots. Some of those misses led directly to UNC baskets. She didn't seem bothered by UNC's physical play, although it may have influenced her to drift out and take slightly off-balance shots. She did a decent job on defense and grabbed 4 rebounds, but she simply wasn't as productive as Duke needed her to be.

Jasmine Thomas

This was the first time I've seen Jasmine look visibly frustrated on the floor this year. The UConn game was one thing--that game was lost very quickly. This game was quite another, as her teammates were chucking quick shots, committing silly fouls, turning the ball over and not getting back on defense. She took over in the second half, hitting tough jumper after tough jumper to keep her team close. She then came up with a key steal and drained a huge three, but she had no opportunity to take the final shot of the game. Jasmine came up with 4 steals but also turned the ball over 5 times, many of them unforced. I'd be interested to see what kind of comments she has for her teammates in practice this week.

Chelsea Gray

Chelsea came to play in this game, dropping 4 threes on the Heels in 7 tries. She also scored on a drive, a fast break basket, a long jumper and a couple of free throws. The Heels' small backcourt and some solid high screens made it easy for her to get any shot she wanted--sometimes too easy. A Chelsea who was constantly shooting (with a team-high 16 shots) was a Chelsea who wasn't finding her teammates. Her early passes to K.Thomas and J.Thomas went by the wayside a bit when she started rolling up points. In particular, she had options on that last shot that could have resulted in a better look for Duke that she chose not to make. That's understandable in the heat of battle, but her decision a few minutes earlier to pull up for a three when she had a lane to the basket was an example of falling a little too in love with her shot. Chelsea didn't really pressure UNC point guard Cetera DeGraffenreid much, trying to stay in front of her instead. She still allowed her to hit a couple of key shots.

Karima Christmas

Karima didn't start due to being late for a meeting, and she was remarkably listless in the first half. Other than dishing a couple of assists to Vernerey, she didn't make much of an impact at all. In the second half, she was more active on the boards and scored a key basket. She did miss the front end of a one-and-one that would have tied the game late. While she wasn't the only player who was guarding her, she did a poor job of containing Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, who nearly had a triple-double. This was a game where Duke was depending on her to really step up throughout the game, and she didn't do it. Rima simply needs to bring the energy she tapped into late in the game to the entire game.

Allison Vernerey

Alli, perhaps motivated by a subpar showing in Chapel Hill last year, was fired up from the very beginning. With the Heels concentrating on K.Thomas, Vernerey was able to slip and slide her way through gaps to get great scoring position. She was so confident that she even took her opponent off the dribble for a basket. She had 4 boards but had a few 50-50 balls ripped out of her hands. When she was in the game, UNC didn't seem to be able to exploit Duke's zone quite as easily, thanks to her length and quick recovery. Other than missing a couple of free throws, this was one of her strongest games of the year.

Shay Selby

Shay played just a few minutes to spell the starting guards and did nothing of note. She was an active cheerleader from the bench in the second half.

Chloe Wells

Chloe was in the game briefly as a point guard sub and turned the ball over once.

Leener scrapped for a couple of boards and found Chelsea for a three. She walked trying to set herself up for a shot and missed her only three.

Tricia Liston

Tricia wasn't shy about hoisting up shots, but all 5 of them didn't drop. That included a potential stickback as she aggressively went to the boards. She committed a couple of unforced turnovers as she seemed to be in too much of a hurry.
