offense. Waltiea Rolle was able to bottle her up effectively while battling
Krystal to a standstill on the boards (11 for Krystal, 9 for Rolle). A lot of
this was by design; as I predicted, UNC double-teamed Krystal every time she
touched the ball. She was able to find Jasmine once for a basket but otherwise
didn't move the ball that quickly when she was double-teamed. Coach McCallie
called her and Karima out for "not showing up". |

physical Carolina frontline. She did hit a big second-half basket that briefly put Duke
in the lead, but she was mostly yanked for more physical teammates. |

always a good thing. She was 0-8 from the floor, with almost all of them jump
shots. Some of those misses led directly to UNC baskets. She didn't seem
bothered by UNC's physical play, although it may have influenced her to drift
out and take slightly off-balance shots. She did a decent job on defense and
grabbed 4 rebounds, but she simply wasn't as productive as Duke needed her to be. |

the floor this year. The UConn game was one thing--that game was lost very
quickly. This game was quite another, as her teammates were chucking quick
shots, committing silly fouls, turning the ball over and not getting back on
defense. She took over in the second half, hitting tough jumper after tough
jumper to keep her team close. She then came up with a key steal and drained a
huge three, but she had no opportunity to take the final shot of the game.
Jasmine came up with 4 steals but also turned the ball over 5 times, many of
them unforced. I'd be interested to see what kind of comments she has for her
teammates in practice this week. |

tries. She also scored on a drive, a fast break basket, a long jumper and a
couple of free throws. The Heels' small backcourt and some solid high screens
made it easy for her to get any shot she wanted--sometimes too easy. A Chelsea
who was constantly shooting (with a team-high 16 shots) was a Chelsea who wasn't
finding her teammates. Her early passes to K.Thomas and J.Thomas went by the
wayside a bit when she started rolling up points. In particular, she had
options on that last shot that could have resulted in a better look for Duke
that she chose not to make. That's understandable in the heat of battle, but
her decision a few minutes earlier to pull up for a three when she had a lane
to the basket was an example of falling a little too in love with her shot.
Chelsea didn't really pressure UNC point guard Cetera DeGraffenreid much,
trying to stay in front of her instead. She still allowed her to hit a couple
of key shots. |

remarkably listless in the first half. Other than dishing a couple of assists
to Vernerey, she didn't make much of an impact at all. In the second half, she
was more active on the boards and scored a key basket. She did miss the front
end of a one-and-one that would have tied the game late. While she wasn't the
only player who was guarding her, she did a poor job of containing Tierra
Ruffin-Pratt, who nearly had a triple-double. This was a game where Duke was
depending on her to really step up throughout the game, and she didn't do it.
Rima simply needs to bring the energy she tapped into late in the game to the
entire game. |

was fired up from the very beginning. With the Heels concentrating on
K.Thomas, Vernerey was able to slip and slide her way through gaps to get great
scoring position. She was so confident that she even took her opponent off the
dribble for a basket. She had 4 boards but had a few 50-50 balls ripped out of
her hands. When she was in the game, UNC didn't seem to be able to exploit
Duke's zone quite as easily, thanks to her length and quick recovery. Other
than missing a couple of free throws, this was one of her strongest games of
the year. |
