Duke's win over Wake Forest was the textbook definition of "routine". Wake came
out face-guarding Jasmine Thomas, but the Devils moved the ball around nicely
and carved up Wake's defense in the early going. Wake was able to stay within
range in the first ten minutes of the game or so, but an 8-0 Duke run put them
up by 13 points. Duke couldn't quite shake the Deacs after that, but a three
by Jasmine Thomas gave the Devils a 17-point lead at the half. After that, the
rout was on for the Devils, as it took Wake nearly thirteen minutes to score 10
more points. Meanwhile, the Devils uncorked 24 points to take a commanding 30
point lead. Duke's young players got plenty of minutes and did a good job of
staying focused, outscoring Wake's young players 20-9 down the stretch. Duke
simply did what they needed to do: they were +21 on the boards, they had 21
assists on their 32 field goals, they forced 21 Wake Forest turnovers, and they
held the Deacs to a season-low 39 points on 26% shooting. Wake was absolutely
no match for them, even at home at Joel Coliseum, and the Devils moved quickly to squash
whatever confidence the Deacs had going into the game.
