In a game where Duke never seemed to be in significant trouble no matter what
the score was, the Devils dominated Boston College inside thanks to 16 points
from Krystal Thomas and 15 from Allison Vernerey. It was an odd game
statistically for Duke, as Jasmine Thomas scored only 4 points, but Karima
Christmas picked up her slack with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Duke's bench
scored just a total of 4 points, yet Kathleen Scheer was brilliant at both ends
with 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and a steal--all at crucial times in the
game. Most importantly for Duke, K.Thomas held Carolyn Swords, one of the top
scorers and rebounders in the ACC, to just 6 points and 5 rebounds. For the
game, Duke held a whopping 48-14 advantage in points in the paint; only the
long-range shooting of BC point guard Jaclyn Thoman (21 points) kept BC in the
ball game. The Devils also kept the Eagles off the foul line and held them to a
mere 8 offensive rebounds, two battles they lost last season in their upset loss
in Chestnut Hill. The most heartening thing about this game for the Blue Devils
was the way they were able to get looks for their post players against a tall
and active Boston College zone. The Devils' two-post attack was partly
responsible for that success, along with the interior passing of Scheer and the
penetration of Chelsea Gray. With the Canes defeating the Tar Heels earlier today in Chapel Hill, Duke remains a full game ahead of Miami and
Florida State and is now a game and a half ahead of UNC with four games to go.
