It didn't take Duke long to establish control of their game with Georgia Tech. An early 8-0 run gave the Devils a 10-3 lead and was forcing Tech out of their comfort zone on offense. Tech prefers to get the ball inside first, drive second and shoot third. Duke forced them to go to their third option right away, but to their credit, they made Duke pay for leaving the three point shot available. Tech sank 6 of 14 first half threes, which helped prevent the game from entering into blowout territory. The Devils established their lead by getting quite a bit of post scoring. Jasmine Thomas hit Allison Vernerey inside and Shay Selby followed that up by finding Krystal Thomas in transition for a three point play. After a three by Karima Christmas, Gray found Vernerey open on a cut to give Duke a 12-5 lead. For the next eight minutes, Duke's lead hovered between 4 and 7 points. Duke was 5-8 from the foul line and Duke got post scores from K.Thomas, Vernerey and Haley Peters on a hook shot. Tech stayed in range with their three point shooting, trailing 25-21 with 6:11 left in the half. The Devils rained down a barrage of jump shots on the bewildered Jackets, as Gray hit a three and J.Thomas, Christmas and Richa Jackson all splashed in 15' jumpers. After a Jackson drive with 3:31 to go, the Devils led 36-23. Tech was turning the ball over and started to miss shots. Metra Walthour hit a three to pull Tech closer, but Duke seemed to have a real answer with 7 seconds to go as Selby sank a corner three. However, Walthour zipped down the floor, took a couple of dribbles past midcourt and dropped in a bomb. That cut the halftime lead to 10 and gave Tech a little momentum. Still, Duke's overwhelming 18-2 edge in points in the paint and their 10-3 advantage in points off turnovers offset Tech's threes. The Devils shot an astounding 68% as a result. Duke's lead stayed between 9 and 13 points for the first seven minutes of the second half. Gray and J.Thomas both drained threes while Christmas scored 4 more points. Then Duke went small, a move that was no doubt spurred by Tech's solid perimeter shooting. That move put Peters at center Christmas at forward, and also saw Chloe Wells enter the game for the first time. This move turned out to be an unequivocal disaster. GT ran off 7 straight points, mixing in 2 layups in the post with yet another three. Wells did thread the needle and found Christmas inside, but Wells then fouled Walthour while she was attemping a three. Selby found K.Thomas inside, but Tech then pulled within 55-53 with 7:14 remaining. Tech's defense was intense and they forced Jaz into a tough three. However, Christmas picked up the rebound and stuck it in just before the shot clock expired. That invigorated the Devils, who got a stop, and Peters gave them a 6 point cushion with a turnaround jumper on the block. After Tech's Chelsea Regins missed the front end of a one-and-one, Christmas tore down the floor and scored on a drive. With 5:11 to go, Duke now led 61-53. With Duke hellbent on preventing Tech from taking threes, the Jackets had some open short jumpers and pulled within 61-55. Christmas then found K.Thomas inside to boost the lead to 8 once again, but Montgomery got fouled and hit 2 shots. Gray was fouled and hit 2, but a GT jumper and a Peters turnover allowed Tech to get within 65-61. It was still a two-possession game, but it was a bit too close for comfort for Duke. Gray hit a foul shot and Christmas was fouled going after the free throw and hit both to make it 68-61. Tech kept coming, as their Ty Marshall blocked a shot by Gray and the team pulled within 4 yet again. J.Thomas pulled up and drilled a 17' jump shot, but Walthour drilled 2 free throws to make that margin 4 once again. Christmas was then called for a charge, giving Tech a chance to finally cut into that lead. Gray went after Marshall and forced a jump ball, with possession going back to Duke. Incredibly, Peters threw a bad pass trying to get a "touchdown" in transition and Tech called a time-out with 45 seconds left. This time, Gray simply stole the inbounds pass and got fouled. She made 1, Tech missed on their next possession and it was all over from there. Tech shot better in the second half and pounded Duke on the boards, earning an 11-2 advantage in points in the paint. Duke continued to shoot well (50% in the half and 59% for the game, their second-best mark of the season), but they gave up 19 offensive rebounds to the Jackets. The Devils in general took good care of the ball against Tech's press and their 10 fast break points were key. Duke will now attempt to win the program's 7th ACC championship in the last 12 years. |
