In a game where Duke was outplayed for close to 35 minutes, the Devils somehow found a way to crack the unflappable Marist Red Foxes and pull out a 71-66 victory. The win propelled the Devils into the Sweet Sixteen and a match-up with DePaul. It extended Duke's home winning streak to 25 games. The Devils haven't lost an NCAA game at home since losing to San Francisco in 1996, which was also the last time Duke lost to a mid-major team in Cameron. Marist was no ordinary mid-major team, having won 31 games and earning a #17 ranking. Duke was tight in the early going and Marist was lose, running Duke ragged with their screening action and deadly jump shooting. Incredibly, Marist's resolve hardened even further when their star guard Erica Allenspach when down with an injury and did not return. The Red Foxes pushed the lead to 11 on a couple of occasions and still led by 6 late in the game, but Chelsea "The Closer" Gray led the late charge, along with key baskets from Jasmine & Krystal Thomas. The mantra from the players after the game was simply "Survive and advance". Duke played poorly for much of the game but their experience, toughness and resolve allowed them to ultimately prevail.
