Duke Starters (from post to point)

Elizabeth Williams

Liz was rushing shots early and was a bit unsure on the best way to get in position for the best shots. Defensively, she was erasing any shots Pfeiffer dared put up against her and grabbing rebounds. She finally relaxed a bit and her teammates started getting her the ball in better spots; she finished lobs and inbounds plays, at one point hitting 6 field goals in a row. Liz demonstrated great hands, catching anything thrown in her general direction and even finishing a lob. Williams' 9 rebounds still felt low based on her size; she was outworked a couple of times for some balls but still demonstrated tremendous tenacity as she went after multiple offensive rebounds. Her length made her a nightmare to pass in against, as she grabbed 4 steals. She blocked 7 shots without committing a single foul. She even sank 3 of 4 foul shots, though the miss was the front end of a one-and-one. All told, 21 and 9 is a fine debut for anyone, and there's no ceiling on what she can do.

Haley Peters

Haley was quietly efficient in this game, draining three jump shots and finishing once in transition. The range and confidence in her jumper make her a major weapon, but it's clear she's still trying to figure out how she fits in this particular lineup.

Chloe Wells

Chloe continued her sharp play in this game with a dominant 15-point, 5 assist, 5 steal showing. She may well be the most improved player on the team, shoring up her weaknesses in a demonstrable way. I thought last year she dribbled too much; in this game, she rarely dominated the ball. Last year Chloe shot too much and took too many long shots off the dribble, but in this game she patiently waited for the ball to come to her and took great shots. Granted, she was able to get great looks against a tiny backcourt that was overmatched, but she stayed disciplined and focused throughout the game, scoring and distributing efficiently and constantly disrupting Pfeiffer's offense. Chloe did a great job of making Duke's offense run basket-to-basket, jump-starting several fast breaks after steals and getting a couple of steal/runouts on her own. If she's able to do this against better opponents and do it game in and game out, Duke will have a very interesting backcourt.

Chelsea Gray

Chelsea is clearly the best player on the team, and though she flirted with a quadruple-double, her concentration level was something like a 4 out of 10. That's what resulted in the four turnovers: going too fast and not paying close enough attention to what was happening on the floor. Otherwise, her performance was occasionally supernatural; Pfeiffer coach Jill Thomas admitted to being starstruck at times watching her. In the first four minutes of the game, she scored on a drive, found Peters for a jumper, had a steal & runout and drained a three. She quieted down a bit after that and spent some time on the bench with two fouls. In the second half, she got a steal and found Selby in transition, scored on a drive and then hit Wells for an open three in the corner. She then found Scheer in transition and then used a superb seal from Williams to score on an easy drive. I think Chelsea is trying to figure out when to take over as a scorer and when to set others up, but as she continues to get more comfortable as the team's catalyst and gets in tip-top shape, she could be a truly dominant force.

Shay Selby

Shay did a little of everything as part of Duke's three guard attack. She was going after loose balls, applying pressure and patrolling passing lanes on her way to 7 steals. She was aggressively shooting and attacking the basket for 11 points. She grabbed 5 boards and pushed tempo, generating most of her 5 assists in transition. Selby looked like a poised senior making plays, and the team's backcourt was greater than the sum of its parts in this game.

Off the Duke Bench (in order of entry)

Tricia Liston

Tricia was pressing just a little bit at times, but started to produce nicely when she took a breath and relaxed. She had a three point play after finishing a fast break and had an all-hustle tip-in just before the half. She also twice found Williams inside, once on a lob and once in transition. In the second half, she drained a three and had another stickback, as well as finding Jackson for a trey. Tricia looked pretty fleet of foot as she chased down 5 rebounds.

Kathleen Scheer

Scheer was the one of the first players off the bench, being her typical accommodating self. Whatever the staff asks her to do, she does it without question, and I get the sense she'll get a lot of minutes early in the season in an effort to give the younger players time to figure things out. She was solid in this game, finishing in transition and getting a stickback. Leener hit Vernerey and Selby for back-to-back assists and was active on defense with 2 steals and a block. She missed both of her long jump shots, but that's not an element of her game that I really expect much from at this point. Scheer is all about hustle and teamwork.

Allison Vernerey

I thought it was interesting that she played just ten minutes. I think McCallie knows exactly what she can do, and she scored at will when she got the ball. It was painful to watch her miss 6 straight foul shots during the span of just a minute or so of game time, however. Alli had a block and an assist to Liston for three.

Amber Henson

Amber's potential is truly tantalizing. The form on her jump shot is picture-perfect and she showed that off a bit. Even when shooting off-balance, she has a way of squaring her shoulders to the basket that reflects a lot of practice. Her longer jumpers didn't fall in this game, but she did score on a variety of short jumpers from 10' that used the window to guide the ball in. She had a high post to assist to Williams for a three point play and a pass out to Jackson for a three. She had one turnover early in the game when she shuffled her feet instead of taking an open shot, but she didn't make that mistake again. She played just fifteen minutes, which is appropriate given that the team is trying to save her knees a bit.

Richa Jackson

Richa came into the game surprisingly late, but she certainly demonstrated her unique skills as well as the areas where she needs improvement. She is a smooth, relentless offensive player. Jackson is a tremendous shooter, and it's clear that she practiced her form in the offseason. She also showed a nose for the ball, coming up with 5 offensive rebounds and 2 steals. Jackson also had a couple of silly fouls, including one that put Pfeiffer at the foul line. I'm hoping that she can be a part of the regular rotation in real games this year.

Ka'lia Johnson

KJ played hard but didn't necessarily have a big impact. Most of her minutes came at the end of the game, and she didn't score until Jackson came up with an offensive rebound and fed her for a short jumper. KJ also had a nice heads-up assist to Williams on an inbounds play. She also played solid pressure defense and never lost enthusiasm; she took a charge and fired up her teammates as a result. I sense that this is a player who will improve given more playing time and opportunities, especially as she becomes more comfortable with her teammates. Getting those opportunities will be difficult, especially if she doesn't maximize her statistical impact during her minutes.

Jenna had an energetic three minutes but never tried to do too much. She grabbed one board and helped start a break.
