get in position for the best shots. Defensively, she was erasing any shots
Pfeiffer dared put up against her and grabbing rebounds. She finally relaxed a
bit and her teammates started getting her the ball in better spots; she finished
lobs and inbounds plays, at one point hitting 6 field goals in a row. Liz
demonstrated great hands, catching anything thrown in her general direction and
even finishing a lob. Williams' 9 rebounds still felt low based on her size;
she was outworked a couple of times for some balls but still demonstrated
tremendous tenacity as she went after multiple offensive rebounds. Her length
made her a nightmare to pass in against, as she grabbed 4 steals. She blocked
7 shots without committing a single foul. She even sank 3 of 4 foul shots,
though the miss was the front end of a one-and-one. All told, 21 and 9 is a
fine debut for anyone, and there's no ceiling on what she can do. |

finishing once in transition. The range and confidence in her jumper make her
a major weapon, but it's clear she's still trying to figure out how she fits in
this particular lineup. |

assist, 5 steal showing. She may well be the most improved player on the team,
shoring up her weaknesses in a demonstrable way. I thought last year she
dribbled too much; in this game, she rarely dominated the ball. Last year Chloe shot too
much and took too many long shots off the dribble, but in this game she
patiently waited for the ball to come to her and took great shots. Granted, she
was able to get great looks against a tiny backcourt that was overmatched, but
she stayed disciplined and focused throughout the game, scoring and distributing
efficiently and constantly disrupting Pfeiffer's offense. Chloe did a great
job of making Duke's offense run basket-to-basket, jump-starting several fast
breaks after steals and getting a couple of steal/runouts on her own. If she's
able to do this against better opponents and do it game in and game out, Duke
will have a very interesting backcourt. |

with a quadruple-double, her concentration level was something like a 4 out of
10. That's what resulted in the four turnovers: going too fast and not paying
close enough attention to what was happening on the floor. Otherwise, her
performance was occasionally supernatural; Pfeiffer coach Jill Thomas admitted
to being starstruck at times watching her. In the first four minutes of the
game, she scored on a drive, found Peters for a jumper, had a steal & runout
and drained a three. She quieted down a bit after that and spent some time on
the bench with two fouls. In the second half, she got a steal and found Selby
in transition, scored on a drive and then hit Wells for an open three in the
corner. She then found Scheer in transition and then used a superb seal from
Williams to score on an easy drive. I think Chelsea is trying to figure out
when to take over as a scorer and when to set others up, but as she continues
to get more comfortable as the team's catalyst and gets in tip-top shape, she
could be a truly dominant force. |

She was going after loose balls, applying pressure and patrolling passing lanes
on her way to 7 steals. She was aggressively shooting and attacking the basket
for 11 points. She grabbed 5 boards and pushed tempo, generating most of her 5
assists in transition. Selby looked like a poised senior making plays, and the
team's backcourt was greater than the sum of its parts in this game. |

nicely when she took a breath and relaxed. She had a three point play after
finishing a fast break and had an all-hustle tip-in just before the half. She
also twice found Williams inside, once on a lob and once in transition. In the
second half, she drained a three and had another stickback, as well as finding
Jackson for a trey. Tricia looked pretty fleet of foot as she chased down 5
rebounds. |

accommodating self. Whatever the staff asks her to do, she does it without
question, and I get the sense she'll get a lot of minutes early in the season
in an effort to give the younger players time to figure things out. She was
solid in this game, finishing in transition and getting a stickback. Leener
hit Vernerey and Selby for back-to-back assists and was active on defense with
2 steals and a block. She missed both of her long jump shots, but that's not
an element of her game that I really expect much from at this point. Scheer is
all about hustle and teamwork. |

I
think McCallie knows exactly what she can do, and she scored at will when she
got the ball. It was painful to watch her miss 6 straight foul shots during
the span of just a minute or so of game time, however. Alli had a block and an
assist to Liston for three. |

The form on her jump shot is
picture-perfect and she showed that off a bit. Even when shooting off-balance,
she has a way of squaring her shoulders to the basket that reflects a lot of
practice. Her longer jumpers didn't fall in this game, but she did score on a
variety of short jumpers from 10' that used the window to guide the ball in.
She had a high post to assist to Williams for a three point play and a pass out
to Jackson for a three. She had one turnover early in the game when she
shuffled her feet instead of taking an open shot, but she didn't make that
mistake again. She played just fifteen minutes, which is appropriate given
that the team is trying to save her knees a bit. |

demonstrated her unique skills as well as the areas where she needs
improvement. She is a smooth, relentless offensive player. Jackson is a
tremendous shooter, and it's clear that she practiced her form in the
offseason. She also showed a nose for the ball, coming up with 5 offensive
rebounds and 2 steals. Jackson also had a couple of silly fouls, including one
that put Pfeiffer at the foul line. I'm hoping that she can be a part of the
regular rotation in real games this year. |

Most of her
minutes came at the end of the game, and she didn't score until Jackson came up
with an offensive rebound and fed her for a short jumper. KJ also had a nice
heads-up assist to Williams on an inbounds play. She also played solid
pressure defense and never lost enthusiasm; she took a charge and fired up her
teammates as a result. I sense that this is a player who will improve given
more playing time and opportunities, especially as she becomes more comfortable
with her teammates. Getting those opportunities will be difficult, especially
if she doesn't maximize her statistical impact during her minutes. |
