Game Recap

Duke's victory over UNC-Wilmington was a dominant one, but it was all the more impressive because the Devils were so focused for so much of the game. Coming off of finals week, it was a testament to just how much the team wanted to compete and play well. That was especially important given that Duke sleepwalked their way though the first half of the USC-Upstate contest. Other than a couple of brief lapses where UNC-W got some open looks at the basket, the Devils simply intimidated the Seahawks into turnovers, bad shots and overall tentative play. That's what led to 40 UNC-W turnovers, 28 of them on Duke steals. Duke has forced that many turnovers or close to it before; in this game, the Devils converted them into 56 points. That's more points than the Seahawks scored all game. Indeed, both the bench (51 points) and starters (53 points) outscored the entire UNC-W team on their own. Duke had 48 field goals and 36 of them came off of assists. 31 points came in transition, as the team shared the ball nicely. Seven Duke players had multiple assists. Seven Duke players also had multiple steals.

Duke started the game on a 14-1 run that could have been even bigger. Duke's guards were in complete control as Chelsea Gray found Elizabeth Williams inside for the game's first points, and late hit Allison Vernerey in transition. Gray also scored with a scoop shot that kept her opponent off-balance. Chloe Wells hit a floater and found Vernerey posting up. Vernerey hit Williams on the first of many high-low plays, while Richa Jackson had a steal & layup. The Seahawks scored the game's next 7 points thanks to some fouls and a turnover. Gray broke that up with a three, sparking a 12-2 run that put Duke up 26-10 midway through the first half. Duke's post players just crushed the Seahawks, as Vernerey had 4 points and an assist to Williams and Tricia Liston drained a three. The post players had 8 of Duke's next 10 points, but UNC-W hung around and trailed just 30-17 with under seven minutes left.

That's when Duke turned up the defensive pressure and started to execute more precisely on offense. Gray was unreal during the run, with 4 points and 2 assists in spectacular fashion. The Devils ended the half on a 25-5 run, with Vernerey scoring 8 more points, Liston tallying 3 assists and scoring 7 points of her own. Duke easily dealt with two quick fouls committed by Haley Peters to dominate in the paint (42-10), off turnovers (30-9), on fast breaks (12-4), on second chances (13-2) and off the bench (30-2). The Devils shot 57%, were +11 on the boards and forced 21 turnovers. Vernerey scored 18 points in the first half alone; Liston had 12 and Williams 10.

In the second half, Wells came up with a steal and hit Jackson for a layup, but UNC-W would score the next 6 points after playing some terrific defense and running the floor. Wells scored on a cut after a dish from Gray and Jackson sank a difficult turnaround jumper, but the Seahawks drilled open, back-to-back threes to cut the lead to 27. They weren't going to win the game, but they had a chance to at least make the second half respectable. That chance went out the window with a 14-0 Duke run that drained all of the fight out of their opponent. Gray and Williams had 4 points apiece during the run as Duke went up 75-34. Duke didn't let up, outscoring UNC-W 32-11 down the stretch as Duke's reserves got extensive playing time. This puts Duke in a good place prior to the long holiday break; we'll see if the Devils can come back and play with as much focus when they go up against Temple next week.
