Duke Starters (from post to point)

Elizabeth Williams

Liz was of course awesome as she became only the fifth Duke player to record a triple double, and the first to do it with points-rebounds-blocks. She rejected shots by each of Wake's five starters and blocked Sandra Garcia five times! What's scary about this performance is that it could have been even more dominant if she had hit some of her easy first half shots (I counted three missed layups) and sank some more of her free throws. She also dropped a few passes and traveled a couple of times. She was so dominant that she could have easily scored 30 points. What was really encouraging about her game was that she's starting to find open teammates when she's double-teamed, something she wasn't doing earlier in the year. Her 4 assists were part of the team's 22 dishes on 27 field goals, which is an impressive number. Some of her turnovers come from her being so excited that she isn't fully aware of her environment, like when a player comes from behind her to slap the ball away. Once she got going in transition and in the post, she was simply a tank rolling over her opponents. Liz held Garcia (Wake's leading scorer) to 0 points on 0-11 shooting. Wake simply had no answer for Williams.

Haley Peters

Haley missed quite a few shots, but she had the biggest hand in establishing Duke's lead in the first half. She scored 10 of Duke's last 12 points in the half. The only other basket was a stickback of a Peters miss. I liked the way Haley got a lot more physical in this game than in other contests. She seemed much more eager to mix it up inside on defense, assisting Williams on pressuring opponents in the post. She also grabbed a number of rebounds, though coach McCallie noted that she wants her to average close to a double-double. She's not there yet, but this game displayed how she's evolving; for example, she took a charge in this game.

Richa Jackson

This was a quietly effective game for Richa, who was actively attacking the basket, grabbing rebounds and moving the ball around. She really has a nose for the basket and likes contact as she drives to the basket. She scored 8 of Duke's first 12 points and her aggressiveness was welcome at the beginning of the game, where other Duke players tend to sit back and see how the action is unfolding.

Tricia Liston

Tricia got in early foul trouble and looked out of sorts for much of the game as a result. She hit a big three in the second half that put the game completely out of reach, but her turnovers were especially careless. I expect her to come out firing in the next game.

Chelsea Gray

Overall, this was not a great game for Chelsea. She frequently melted down against Wake's pressure and threw some terrible passes as a result. She was one of the players who was most badly burned by Lakevia Boykin, losing her a number of times on the perimeter. She did drain a long three in the second half and had a number of slick assists, as well as taking a charge, but her all-around game just wasn't there. That said, she did have a crucial three point play in the second half that helped break Wake's back.

Off the Duke Bench (in order of entry)

Shay Selby

Selby was up and down in this game as she struggles to regain her game rhythms. Her miscues led directly to Wake points. On the other hand, she was aggressive going after rebounds, drained a trey, ran the floor well and was unselfish in distributing the ball. While one would like her to be more efficient, she did shoot over 50% and didn't have as many turnovers as most of her teammates. She has the potential to be a major weapon off the bench.

Allison Vernerey

After barely playing against Virginia, Alli was solid off the bench. She actively hunted her shot and was able to get it off quickly. She also did a nice job passing the ball, finding Peters and Jackson for baskets. It must also be mentioned that she drained both free throw attempts and is starting to look much more comfortable at the line.

Kathleen Scheer

Other than a couple of incredibly careless turnovers (on one, she fumbled a rebound out of bounds), Leener gave Duke some solid minutes. She hit a couple of short jumpers and set the pace in the way she scrapped after the ball. If she can cut down on her errors, then Scheer will truly be giving Duke maximum value for her minutes, because her court awareness has become quite sharp over the last couple of years. She's someone who can make plays at key times, and the time will come this season when Duke will need her to do so.

Ka'lia Johnson

KJ got fairly limited run as Selby got the lion's share of minutes at backup guard, but she was still fairly solid during her short stint. She was physical and grabbed 4 rebounds, and drained 2 free throws after being hammered after one board. Like her teammates, she had trouble holding on to the ball.
