Moral victories are no victories at all, but for the first time in a long time Duke made UConn sweat a little before losing 61-45. The bottom line is that UConn once again turned Duke into a one-on-one jump-shooting team (leading to Duke shooting just 25% and dishing out only 8 assists). But this time Duke never gave up on the defensive end. Duke forced 21 UConn turnovers (13 in the second half) and hung close on the boards (-6 for the game), but the Devils rushed their shots and never recovered from a twelve minute field goal drought in the second half. That drought came after Duke had fought within 5 points and had two chances to cut the lead to 3. The Devils had fought back from a 14 point first half deficit to make the game interesting, as UConn got plenty of hustle points in the first half but couldn't buy a jumper. In the second half, Duke got a ton of hustle plays but the Huskies bombed in 6 three pointers to keep Duke at bay. Chelsea Gray tried her best, and while there wasn't a ton of creativity in the sets she was running, the truth is that her teammates couldn't finish a lot of open shots. The Huskies won because their balance was typically excellent, getting a huge lift from the bench in Kiah Stokes grabbing 12 rebounds as Stefanie Dolson sat out much of the game with foul trouble. Duke tried to get its best penetrators (Gray & Richa Jackson) involved but they missed on many drives, and Elizabeth Williams was rushing shots all night. That second half drought featured especially rushed play as Duke seemed to feel pressure to get the lead back right away instead of taking their time. Unlike the beatdowns that UConn issued last season this felt like a game that Duke could actually learn from. We'll see how that goes as Duke takes on the back half of its ACC schedule.
