Duke Starters (from post to point)

Elizabeth Williams

Liz rushed some shots in the first half as she was trying to adjust to Shegog (and later Rolle's size), but still scored 7 points as she got to the line for 4 attempts, scored on a stickback and finished on a cut. She also had assists to Selby for three on two occasions in the first half, and found Jackson & Peters for jumpers in the second half. She also posted up more successfully in the half, scoring 6 points. She was frightening defensively, authoritatively blocking 6 shots (keeping most of them in play!) en route to breaking the ACC rookie season blocked shot record. She was held back a bit by foul trouble and plagued by turnovers as she let go of the ball when she got some passes she wasn't quite ready for. Still, this was a solid showing for a frosh in the big rivalry game.

Haley Peters

Haley struggled to score in the first half (0-4), missing some open shots that she usually hits. The second half was another story, as she quickly scored in transition, drained a three, scored on a post-up and a cut, and found Liston in transition. This was a quiet performance for her even as others stepped up, but it was good to see her bounce back in the second half.

Richa Jackson

Richa's game is unorthodox at times, but quite effective. Her willingness to get physical came in handy against the Heels. She finished in transition early in the game and later hit a 10' jumper and sank a three. In the second half, she scored in transition, drained a double-clutch jumper and nailed a turnaround jumper from 17' as the shot clock buzzer sounded. She was all over the Heels on defense, grabbing 3 steals and bodying them up. She perhaps could have blocked out a bit more often (just 4 rebounds), but she was a force for the Devils in this game.

Shay Selby

This was her best all-around showing of the year, which shouldn't be a surprise given that she's frequently come up big against the Heels. She opened Duke's scoring with a corner three, found Jackson in transition and later hit another three on a pass from Williams. She finished the half with a beautiful runner in the lane, right after she zipped a pass to Liston for three. In the second half, she kept the pressure on UNC by sinking another runner (she did well to avoid charging) and later found Vernerey for a score. Other than one bad pass, she did a fine job of controlling tempo and finding her teammates. Selby was a game-long pest for UNC's offense, using her quickness to get in passing lanes and force bad shots, as well as taking a charge.

Chelsea Gray

As expected, Chelsea dominated this matchup with ease. She got Liston going with a great pass for Tricia's first trey of the game, and later dished it to Liston after Chelsea came up with a brilliant steal. Chelsea also picked her spots on offense, pulling up for an early jumper and sticking it, getting a stickback, pulling up for a three and then hitting an insanely long three in the first half. That shot deflated the Heels, as there was nothing they could do to stop it. She missed her threes in the second half, but she did score in transition and hit her trademark bank shot after blowing by a defender. She was content to set up Peters, Vernerey, Williams and Jackson in the second half as she kept her turnovers to just 2. This was just a masterful performance.

Tricia Liston

Tricia was in attack mode all night, playing a controlled but aggressive game. The Heels did not know how to handle her, leaving her alone on the perimeter instead of playing her physically. She was 5-6 from the floor in the first half including a trio of treys. She also scored two on a steal & layup and three on a pass from Gray plus drawing a foul. Liston kept up Duke's passing exposition by finding Gray for a very long three. She cooled off a bit in the second half, scoring in transition and sinking a late three, as well as finding Williams inside for a score. Tricia also got to play point guard for an extended period of time and did a credible job as she brought up the ball. Coach McCallie said she "was so ice in her veins. Just so calm and cool and excited to move the ball." Given room to operate, her floor game was quite savvy and her threeball was a deadly weapon that the Heels did not defend well at all.

Allison Vernerey

Alli's presence at the top of Duke's zone was the key to Duke's game-breaking second half run. UNC's She'la White couldn't see over her, and her length didn't allow UNC's guards to drive past her from that spot. While she did have a couple of turnovers, Alli was otherwise quite efficient. She had a big assist to Liston for a three, blocked some huge shots and dug out a couple of steals, and scored on a beautiful feed from Gray and on a pass from Selby. She also took a huge charge.

Leener had a crowd-pleasing stickback and played some decent post defense in limited minutes, blocking a Broomfield shot and getting a steal to boot.

Ka'lia Johnson

Ka'lia got some extended minutes late in the game, scoring on a dish from Williams. She missed the front end of a one-and-one and stepped on the line after she grabbed a rebound. In general, she did well in absorbing both the speed and physical nature of this game.

Jenna got almost three minutes of playing time, getting a good look at the basket from the corner, only to have the ball hit the side of the backboard. Given her lifetime Duke background it was great to see her have the opportunity to play in this rivalry game.
