Unlike the fluid, exciting game in Durham, the Duke-Maryland matchup in College Park lacked rhythm or flow. It was a choppy game punctuated by lots of fouls and many missed shots, along with a lot of physical play by both teams. Early on, Duke looked fluid on offense with new starter Allison Vernerey (replacing the injured Richa Jackson), as she found Elizabeth Williams for a score for Duke's first points. A drive by Chelsea Gray and a short jumper by Haley Peters made it 6-0 before Tianna Hawkins hit back-to-back shots in the paint. When she got position down low, the Devils simply couldn't stop her. Gray came back with a spinning drive for a score, a rebound and dish to Williams in transition, and a three off an offensive rebound to make it 13-4. Alyssa Thomas, who killed Duke in Durham but was mostly ineffective on offense in this game, hit just one free throw. Williams then answered back with a foul shot of her own and then found Gray for a trey to make it 17-5 at the twelve minute mark. The Terps would score 11 points in the next seven or so minutes while Duke only managed two. The Devils missed five shots and turned it over 5 times, all while picking up five fouls --including Williams' second. This is the point of the game where Duke had a real chance to put their opponent away and instead missed makeable shots and made silly errors. Finally, Peters scored on an up-and-under to push the lead to 21-16, and Gray found Peters for a three to make it 24-18 with 4:25 left. With Williams out, Duke was resorting to taking jump shots, and they simply weren't dropping in. The Terps quickly tied the score at 24-24, but Kathleen Scheer drained a huge three. After a Maryland score, Peters got an offensive rebound and found Gray for the score. Thomas found Laurin Mincy for a quick basket and Hawkins blocked a difficult attempt by Shay Selby, but the Terps just missed scoring at the first half buzzer. Duke was ahead because they were 4-8 from three and Maryland committed 14 turnovers while shooting just 1-5 from long range. Four different Duke players had two fouls apiece, which didn't help the confidence of the team to continue to play pressure defense. Gray scored 14 points and Peters seven for Duke as only four players managed to score at all for the Devils. Duke missed its first four shots of the second half while Thomas and Hawkins both scored for the Terps, lifting them to a 32-30 lead. Williams hit a left-handed hook and scored in transition to put Duke back up, but Lynetta Kizer powered up for another score. Vernerey scored her first points of the game and Williams stuck a hook shot to make it 38-34. The Devils were suddenly having a lot of success pounding it inside, as Vernerey scored again to make it 40-36. Liston drove in for a three point play, and a stickback hook from Williams made it 45-38. Finally, Thomas drew Williams' third foul on a 50-50 charge/block call to help rally her team as she hit both foul shots. With Williams out, Duke went jump-shot happy again as Selby and Scheer both missed with multiple cracks at the basket, and Thomas sank a three at the other end. Selby grabbed an offensive board and found Liston for another driving three point play to make it 48-43. Kizer scored twice in the low block but Liston hit two free throws to make it 50-47 with 6:27 to go. With the shot clock running down, frosh Brene Moseley noticed that Vernerey wasn't stepping out to contest her shot, and pulled up to sink a three that tied it at 50. Duke had three cracks at the basket but couldn't get a shot to drop, and Mincy splashed in a three at the other end to give Maryland a 53-50 lead. Williams somehow grabbed an offensive board and stuck it in past Kizer & Hawkins, but Kizer scored again. Vernerey was fouled after a miss by Peters, and hit two clutch free throws to make it 55-54 with four minutes left. Mincy hit a dagger of a three with 3:36 left, but Williams hit a free throw to start a mini-run. Moseley missed a shot and Williams grabbed the board and was fouled at the other end, hitting both. Moseley missed another shot and Vernerey grabbed the board. After a time-out, Gray hit Peters with a cross-court pass and she hit the long jumper to make it 59-58. Hawkins scored on a three point play after a miss by Kizer, with the ball just slipping out of Peters' hands. Gray answered that with a drive with 21 seconds to go to knot it at 61, but Hawkins stuck back a surprisingly quick shot by Thomas. Duke had ten seconds left and called a timeout. The ball went to a seemingly open Peters in the corner, but Thomas flew over and blocked her shot as time ran out. Maryland played tremendous defense on that play, but their bread-and-butter in this game was getting second-chance points at key moments. Duke actually had an edge in second-chance points (19-17), thanks mostly to Williams, but the Terps got those points when they absolutely had to have them. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see these two top ten teams meet again in the ACC tournament. |
