Analysis and Stats

Why Duke Won: Overwhelming size. The Pirates are a tiny outfit, and Duke pressed its inside advantage to the tune of a 60-12 advantage in points in the paint.

Why Armstrong State Lost: The size and talent differential aside, walking into Cameron and looking up at Duke's huge roster was partly responsible for their awful first ten minutes. Take that away, and Duke's advantage the rest of the way was about 23 points. That's still a resounding defeat, but not quite as painful a thumping.

The Game Turned When...: . Elizabeth Williams announced her presence with 8 of Duke's first 13 points, which also included an assist to Greenwell. Williams has been dialed-in and aggressive throughout the preseason. X-Factor: Lynee' Belton. In her first appearance against live competition, she showed that she's not afraid to get physical. Coach McCallie also referred to her high basketball IQ, and that showed in the way she set her feet to take a couple of charges. She scored on a spin move, a stickback, and foul shots. She also had a nice pass to Erin Mathias for a score. With so many of Duke's other players in foul trouble, Belton came in off the bench to make a positive impact.

Areas For Improvement: Perimeter defense, especially defending against penetration that pitches out to open shooters. The Devils didn't always do a great job at running after loose balls after missed threes by Armstrong (16 offensive rebounds). Duke's ballhandling, passing and overall precision in the halfcourt must improve.

Ramifications: Every game this group plays together makes the lineup picture a little clearer. The Devils missed the versatility of Azura' Stevens in this game; she was out with a very mild ankle sprain. That said, it was good to see Erin Mathias and Lynee' Belton get more minutes and it was especially good to see Kendall Cooper (6 points, 10 rebounds) make a significant impact over a mostly mediocre preseason to date. With this info in hand, Duke now goes back to the drawing board to put together a lineup for their season opener.
