NOSH Nutshell: Williams Dominant as Johnson Notches Triple-Double

Duke played a game of keep-away with Old Dominion, with the 82-66 final score not quite indicative of the contest's flow. A 9-1 run early in the first half gave Duke a double-digit lead at 24-12, but the host Monarchs, beyond a raucous home crowd hungry for an upset, used that energy to build one of many comebacks. They did it by attacking Duke right at its weakness: ballhandling. Five Duke turnovers in a short time span led to an 8-2 run, but it was the presence and will of Ka'lia Johnson that lifted the Devils when they needed it the most. Whether it was a short jumper, a drive or a timely assist to Elizabeth Williams, the other homecoming player exerted her will over the game in a remarkable manner. She showed the grit of a leader and the talent of a difference-maker. Rebecca Greenwell was also key in these situations, as she hit several big shots and made some timely passes as well.

ODU trailed by just five at the half, but a 12-0 run led by frosh Sierra Calhoun's quickness and ability to get to the line staggered the Lady Monarchs. Duke built the lead up to 21, but a stagnant offense led to more Duke turnovers, greater crowd involvement and ODU taking advantage of a guard-heavy offense. Down the stretch, it wasn't just one player who carried Duke. Calhoun hit a big three. Amber Henson scored inside. KJ hit some foul shots and Williams scored inside. KJ was getting rebounds and playing defense. This was a good performance by Duke that exposed their faults, but also gave this mostly young bunch a taste of what victory tastes like in a tight game and how to work to get it.

Top Performers:

  1. Ka"lia Johnson Duke. 18 points, 11 rebounds, 13 assists. With only Duke's seventh triple-double, KJ finally established herself this season not just as a facilitator, but as a true impact player.

  2. Elizabeth Williams, Duke. 22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks. Liz was pretty much unstoppable on the block; more importantly, she was continually aggressive in front of many family members and friends in attendance.

  3. Tiffany Minor, ODU. 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists. Minor's shooting helped pace several ODU rallies.
