While the ACC season is still a couple weeks away from commencing, I thought I'd quickly catch
up our DWHoops readers on what's happening in the league while also revealing our preseason predictions. For 12 days DWHoops will count down the ACC with three items about each team - including factoids, new players to note, trends or other observations. We begin today with Virginia Tech, our pick to finish 12th in the league.
Virginia Tech
DWHoops ACC Prediction: #12
- They are experienced. For once, coach Beth Dunkenberger finally has everyone
she was expecting playing for her team this year. That also includes transfer
Nikki Davis getting a full year to run the team. The Hokies also only lost one
player of significance from last year's squad.
- There's little ACC talent. Dunkenberger has been squeezing every drop of
talent from her team during her tenure, but she doesn't have a single
game-changing player. Her stars, forward Utahya Drye and guard Lindsey Biggs,
would be role players on most other teams. I don't expect any of her players
to sniff All-ACC this year.
- They can rebound. Even when losing, this team plays hard and is sneaky on
the boards. They're the best offensive rebounding team in the ACC and they do
this without having a particularly dominant rebounder on the team. That lack
of talent will prevent the Hokies from winning a lot of games, but Duke can
attest to how hard this team has played them in recent years.
