| Georgia Tech Blows Out the Hokies | |

Fifth-seeded Georgia Tech didn't waste any time in putting away the last place Hokies in today's opening game, resting their starters most of the way home in their 81-58 win. Given that fact the game wasn't nearly as close as the score - the margin was 40-14 at halftime as the Jackets press harassed the Hokies into 22 first half turnovers. Georgia Tech finished with an amazing 49 bench points and 38 points off turnovers.
This contest was illustrative of the difference
between a team hungry to prove itself and one that was disinterested &
disorganized. The Jackets led by as many as 42 points in a game that saw them
build a double-digit lead just five minutes in. Alex Montgomery of Georgia
Tech led her team with 14 points & 7 rebounds, and Ty Marshall matched her with
14. Hokie seniors Elizabeth Basham and Nikki Davis were among the few VT
players who evinced any signs of urgency; Davis had 15 points and Basham 10 in
their last college games. The end result was a nice
workout for the Jackets but not a strenuous exercise as they must face Maryland tomorrow. They
were all business and were determined to end this one early. For their part, VT
was a mostly willing victim. Until the last minutes of the game, their sheer
lack of competitiveness was indicative of their season as a whole. While there
is talent on this team (and more than coach Beth Dunkenberger has had in some of
her years in Blacksburg), there was little cohesion. Dunkenberger never had to
coach effort or teamwork prior to this season, and it leads many to wonder if
she'll be back next season, given that her contract is up this year. The consensus
around the Coliseum today is that she won't.
