NC State and Kelly Harper picked up where they left off last year in Greensboro by notching a nail-biting upset win over Boston College in the third first round game tonight. BC jumped out to a 15 point lead in the first half, but then the Wolfpack turned up the pressure a notch. BC's guards couldn't deal with the press; the result was 20 first half turnovers and only a five point Eagle cushion at the break. Carolyn Swords was a force inside, but Stefanie Murphy was hampered by foul trouble and did not score in the first. That changed in the second as the tandem of Murphy and Swords built a 14 point lead -- but again the bottom would fall out as State mounted a ferocious 14-0 run to tie the game at 55 all. State would took a 61-59 lead with a pair of Kody Burke free throws, their first advantage since leading 4-2. The Wolfpack had many disappointing finishes this year, but perfection on their last 14 free throws was an ideal recipe to correct that. State took a 69-65 lead with 1:10 left on a Bonae Holston jumper, but BC wasn't done yet. A clutch three from Stefanie Murphy followed by a steal and two free throws from Kerri Shields put BC ahead 70-69 with 25 ticks to go. Bonae Holston missed a jumper but Brittany Strachan was there to grab the board. Trying for the stickback she was fouled by Kristen Doherty, making both for a 1 point NCSU lead. After a BC timeout the Eagles got a decent look for Stefanie Murphy, but it didn't go down, then time expired before BC could get another shot up. State advances to face #2 seed Miami on Friday while BC (18-12, 5-9 ACC) is likely done for the year.
