Maine - Monday 12/21 @ 7 PM - Harold Alfond Sports ArenaLast Year: 5-25Current Record: 2-6 Significant Losses: The Black Bears lost leading scorer Britanny Boser, who
averaged 10 ppg and 5 rpg while anchoring the post. Wing Colleen Kilmurray
also moved on after averaging 6 ppg and 5 rpg. The Skinny: As demonstrated in last year's walkover in Cameron, Maine doesn't
possess the size, speed or talent to give a challenge. Playing at home might
help (and Duke has been haunted by weird early-season losses in the past), but
there's not enough offensive flexibility to attack everything that Duke can
throw at them defensive. On defense, they will likely start in a zone and not
budge until the game is decided--one way or another. The Black Bears don't
shoot well, but they are a decent rebounding team. The Devils have to snuff
out any second-chance opportunities for Maine and must do a better job of
closing out on shooters, especially after a rebound. Duke's been getting
burned by this the past couple of years; it's one of the few areas where their
defensive effort has been inconsistent. Ross has yet to play this season, but
Wheeler & Baker are both averaging 10 points apiece, while Tewksbury is
averaging 9 ppg and 7 rpg. Maine will need another couple of years to rebuild
its program under Cindy Blodgett, and this game will mostly serve as a
homecoming game for Coach McCallie, who put Maine on the map as a coach and
again gets to coach against one of former stars.
