DWHoops Countdown of Best Duke Players Continues

Rob Clough's countdown of the top 10 players in Duke Women's Basketball history continues with his selection for #9, Chante Black. Black wore #11 for the Blue Devils from 2005-09, with a redshirt season coming in 2007. She finished her Duke career with 1,438 points, 995 rebounds, and 261 blocked shots. She shot 51.5% from the field, adding 157 assists and 152 steals.

Chante is an underrated figure in Duke history, in my view. She played on some teams that won, but didn't win as big as others. She was on the ACC All-Frosh team in 2005 and played on the team that went all the way to the finals in 2006, but wasn't the focus of either team's offense. She excelled offensively during Joanne P. McCallie's first two seasons as a coach, but Duke finished out of first place both times and twice lost in the ACC finals. The biggest shot of her career was a ridiculous lob tip (pictured below) that sent the 2009 ACC finals into overtime, but her team eventually lost that game. Black had injury issues that limited her at inopportune times. That said, she was still a tremendous force at both ends.

Black was one of Duke's greatest rebounders, never averaging fewer than 6.1 boards a game during her career. As a senior, she boosted that number up to 8 rpg. Black's length, leaping ability and timing also made her a fearsome shotblocker. Black finished just 5 rebounds shy of 1000 for her career, though she does rank as the second greatest rebounder in Duke history. She's also #2 in blocked shots with 261. Chante had an impressive 81 career double figure scoring games and is #9 on the all-time scoring list. She added a jump shot to her game and greatly improved her foul shooting during her final two seasons. Black was ACC defensive player of the year as a senior, with her ability to guard in the post as well as the perimeter making her a a tough matchup. She did a great job in the transition between Goestenkors and McCallie, embracing her new role with relative ease. Black was a productive, solid player who was great on defense and could score in the post.
