DWHoops Countdown Continues

Rob Clough's countdown of the top 10 players in Duke Women's Basketball history continues with his selection for #2, Chris Moreland. She wore #24 for the Blue Devils, the third Duke Women's Basketball jersey number that, in our opinion, deserves the honor of being added to the two already permanently retired.

Chris was the stalwart, the warrior, the unrelenting force. Regardless of time or score, Chris would come at you inside again and again until she finally scored. There was nothing fancy about her game, just sheer work ethic, fundamentals and desire. To say that she rewrote the Duke record book is an understatement of colossal proportions. Her numbers have stood the test of time not only at Duke but in the ACC. In fact, only a transcendently great player could have possibly knocked her out of our top spot in Duke Women's Basketball history. More recent fans of Duke simply cannot begin to comprehend what Moreland meant to the program: she made Duke relevant in women's college basketball in a way it had never been. Prior to Moreland, Duke was an also-ran that got wins thanks to tough coaching and a modicum of talent. With Moreland, Duke started to get in on the conversation of being a team to reckon with in the ACC, not to mention the national top 10 polls.

While the influx of talent in the Goestenkors era led to some of her records being eclipsed, Moreland's numbers still have a presence to be reckoned with. Her 1229 rebounds are 236 more than the nearest competitor. She's still second in scoring with 2232 points, one of just three Duke players in the 2000 point club. Former coach Debbie Leonard has called Moreland, "The best post player in the history of Duke Women's Basketball," and the record book strongly backs that up.

Moreland's efforts made her the first Duke player to win ACC Rookie of the Year, the first Duke ACC Player of the Year, and the first Duke women's player to be enshrined in the Duke Sports Hall of Fame.

Moreland didn't have a lot of flash in her game, but her remarkable consistency and effort made her difficult to contend with. If she had been a better foul shooter (just 66 for her career), she might have scored 2400 points. As we have noted, we are hoping that her jersey will one day hang from the rafters in Cameron. Our top ten will conclude shortly with Rob's pick for the all-time greatest player in Duke Women's Basketball history...
