2011-12 Devils Face First Competition

Pfeiffer -- Thursday, November 3rd, 7:00 PM, Cameron Indoor Stadium (Exhibition, Free Admission, Free Schedule Mini-Posters)

Last Meeting: None

2011 Snapshot: 14-13, 13-7 Conference Carolinas (NCAA Division II)

Significant Losses: : The Falcons lost seven players, including a couple who had good numbers but only played in a limited number of games. The big losses include sharpshooting guard Celeste Caudill (8 ppg, 2 rpg, 46% 3FG) and guard Sam Craven (4 ppg).

Returning Players: : The Falcons return four starters and a couple of key reserves. Guard Brittany Cox is the team's biggest gun, averaging 15 ppg, 4 rpg, 2 apg and 39% from three. Forward Christina Harvey is the team's equivalent of a post player at 5-10, putting up 13 ppg, and 8 rpg; she also went to the foul line 111 times in 27 games. Kellie Rhoney is the point guard, averaging 8 ppg, 4 apg and 36% from three. Wing Vontenea Williams contributed 2 ppg and 2 rpg, while reserves Vontreece Hayes (3.5 ppg, 2 rpg) and Shelley Reese 5 ppg, 2 rpg, 39% 3FG) will be asked to play more minutes this year.

The Skinny: : The Falcons have no players on their roster taller than 6-0. Reese is just 5-1. Eight freshmen will be suiting up for their first-ever collegiate game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. They were a mediocre team last year in Division II. None of these factors bode well for Pfeiffer. On the other hand, they do have four returning starters who at times have put up big numbers. Cox and Harvey were second team all-conference last year. I suspect the Falcons will try to beat Duke's pressure by letting fly from three as quickly as possible. Their post scorers have no hope against Duke's arsenal of trees, and they will also have trouble rebounding if they go inside. However, they may well be able to grab some offensive rebounds from long-range shots if Duke isn't disciplined in beating them to the ball. Defensively, I suspect Pfeiffer will start out in a zone and make Duke prove that they can shoot over it. Assuming that the game gets out of hand, I imagine Pfeiffer will make mass substitutions in an effort to give their frosh some experience against a high-level opponent.

Pfeiffer is a tiny (720 undergrads) college in Misenheimer, NC, just outside of Charlotte. They have graduate campuses in Charlotte and RTP and have a direct relationship to the United Methodist church. The Falcons have been playing basketball since 1976. This game is obviously a big deal for their program.
