DWHoops Minus 10: 1999, Part 3

We continue our look back at the 1999 Duke Blue Devils

Editor's Note: This article is the third entry in our weekly "DWHoops Minus 10" feature, typically published each Wednesday.

After a brutal opening stretch to the season, with certainly the most difficult non-conference schedule Duke had ever faced, it was time for a bit of a break. The Blue Devils returned home for their annual Duke Classic, an event that rarely featured top shelf teams. This year was an exception, as Duke had lined up top-25 Florida as a potential opponent in the championship game. Duke got everyone involved in an easy win over Villanova on November 28th, coached by an apoplectic (as always) Harry Paretta. Michele Van Gorp dominated inside with 23 points and Peppi Browne returned from injury to add 11.

Florida was upset by a Marquette team that packed down into a zone and cut off penetration. Trying the same tactic against Duke, the Warriors were smoked by Duke's cadre of long-range shooters even as they held Gorp to just 3 shots. Nicole Erickson ripped off 5 threes to lead Duke with 18 points and center Payton Black had one of her best games of the year with 18 points off the bench, sliding underneath the zone to get great looks at the basket. Five different players combined for eleven threes as a team, sinking an impressive 42% of their bombs. The Devils won by 31 points and the game was never competitive. The team was starting to find its legs.

Next, Duke opened up its ACC schedule a month early with a game against Florida State. The Seminoles were struggling to find their way as a program - having good players like Brooke Wyckoff and Latavia Coleman helped. The Devils, now fully prepared for life on the road, took control of the game early on and used a devastating inside-outside attack to win easily. Gorp bounced back with 22 points, Krista Gingrich lit up the 'noles with 22 points (including 5 treys) and Erickson continued her strong play with 15 points.
