| Nationally Ranked Marist Bumps Cyclones | |
In the first game of the Durham subregional, #10 seed Marist upset #7 seed Iowa
State. The Red Foxes, long an NCAA tourney spoiler, led by as many as 20
points but had to hold off the Cyclones in the game's final minutes. All five
Marist starters scored in double digits, led by center Kate Oliver. With Iowa
State star shackled by Marist's suffocating defense, the Cyclones turned to 6-7
center Anna Prins, whose work inside (11-14 from the foul line) and outside (2-4
from three) brought ISU as close as 6 points. Marist made a couple of key
steals down the stretch and hit enough free throws to prevent the game from
getting any more tense. The loud and raucous Marist fans chanted "We want
Duke" as the game ended, and the Red Foxes will certainly provide a significant
test for Duke.
