Alison Bales

After a weak offensive showing against Temple, Ali went out guns blazing against Rutgers. Bales missed her first 3 shots of the game but made 7 of her last 8, including long jumpers, turnarounds, tip-ins and inbounds finishes. Defensively, Vaughn and Carson couldn't get anything going inside (Vaughn was 2-6, Carson 3-9); only Ajavon was able to score over her. The final shot of her career looked good all the way. It was nice to see her display all of her skills in her last game: shooting, passing, blocking shots, and hitting free throws. Duke will miss her team-first attitude, her defense, and her sly smile when she blocked someone's shot so hard that they were forced out of bounds.

Carrem Gay

Remy was one of the few Duke players able to score effectively. Rutgers couldn't stop her once she got in the post, either because of her quickness or her ability to shoot hooks. Her only bad shot was a turnaround jumper that was low and flat and was easily rejected. Still, Gay's mobility and aggressiveness made her a tough matchup, and I expect her to continue to develop as a threat next season.

Wanisha Smith

Nish was dominated in the first half, getting completely shut down and coughing the ball up twice. She woke up in the second half, scoring all 7 of her points, getting a couple of key assists, and coming up with some big scoring plays. If she'd been able to hold on to that rebound of Bales' miss late, she would have had a chance to go to the foul line. While Nish did miss several fast break baskets, it should be noted that there was contact from behind on some of them. Nish will be one of the team's leaders next year, and I only hope that she can step up her level of play as well as this team's seniors did.

Abby Waner

Abby Waner

Abby was shut down and frustrated in this game in terms of offense; that last three she took was from 27'. That didn't stop her from working in other areas; she stuck her nose in for 6 rebounds, didn't turn the ball over and fed the ball in for 3 assists. She did lose Prince a couple of times, but it's not like she torched her: just 4-12 from the floor. Abby hates losing more than any Duke player since Alana Beard, and she will also grow from this experience.

Lindsey Harding

Lindsey Harding

Carson did a fantastic job on Lindsey, holding her to 2-6 shooting from the floor and 5 turnovers. Lindsey did have 5 assists, including some great passes in the second half. Lindsey struggled at times in keeping Ajavon out of the paint and was burned several times. At the same time, Ajavon did shoot just 7-19 from the floor. I'll take a longer look at Lindsey's fine career down the road, but suffice it to say that Coach G was correct: she didn't lose this game by herself, and her career certainly shouldn't be judged on this game. And while she did miss those 2 foul shots, consider that it was her amazing steal that put her in that position.

Joy Cheek

Joy Cheek

Joy had trouble getting good looks at the basket, putting up a couple of airballs and getting outquicked for rebounds. With Gay moving & scoring effectively, Coach G made the call to keep Carrem in the game for more minutes than usual, and Joy sat. Like the other young players, Joy will build on the many positives from her freshman year and continue to develop into a player with unique skills and toughness.

Brittany Mitch

Brittany Mitch

Brittany played great defense, got a couple of offensive rebounds, finished a fast break and found Bales inside for a three point play. Her major problem was that she was ill-equipped to handle Rutgers' physical press, and turned the ball over at crucial times. Definitely an experience to grow from, especially since she'll be asked to handle the ball a bit more next season.

Bridgette Mitchell

Bridgette came on towards the end to foul. I would have liked to have seen her get a couple of minutes in the first half, if only to stop Rutgers from having free reign over the offensive boards. Given that Carson was exclusively guarding Harding, Mitchell might have been able to get away with guarding Zurich for a few minutes.
