Alison Bales

Ali missed a ton of easy shots inside, but did hit a 19?, was strong from the foul line, and finished a tough drop-step with contact to stop a Duke slide. Defensively, she was her usual terrifying self, blocking 6 shots, including one off of Williams to get the ball back. She was looking to push the ball constantly, resulting in several remarkable outlet passes. Tomorrow, her battle with Goring should be a memorable one.

Carrem Gay

Carrem was back practicing after taking Monday off, and it showed in her general sharpness. She moved the ball around well early in the game and dusted off her jumper. Defensively, she did have trouble moving her feet a bit and was hampered by foul trouble throughout the game. You could tell that this annoyed Coach G a bit, because the minute she took Bales out with her third foul, she had to put her right back in when Carrem picked up her 4th. Still, Carrem made the most of her half, scoring twice in transition in the early going, finishing an inbounds play, and finding Abby for a three. Carrem also took a charge and otherwise played solid defense. Against NC State, she?ll need to block out Whittington above all other tasks, because this is where State does so much damage.

Wanisha Smith

While this was not a great shooting performance by Nish, she was huge in other areas. Her defense was excellent, leading the charge against Littles and also taking turns on Zoll. Her 9 boards were a career high, but it was her passing that really impressed me. Smith dished to the perimeter for threes, into the post from the wing for scores there, fed cutters and also saw developing inbounds plays. Like everyone on the team, she finds a way to contribute, even if it isn't scoring.

Abby Waner

Abby Waner

This was the offensive explosion we've been waiting for from Abby after so many games where she struggled from the field. When her first shot barely disturbed the net, everyone knew Duke had to get her the ball early and often. While Abby was knocking down 5 first-half threes, she actually couldn't get her layups to land, missing 3 of 4. As always, when Abby's at her best, her game is much more than NBA-range threes. She was passing the ball (assists to Bales, Gay and her sister) grabbing rebounds, getting a steal and even blocking shots. She cooled off a bit in the second half but was still passing the ball. She had 5 points and 2 assists in the last eight minutes of the game alone.

Lindsey Harding

Lindsey Harding

Almost all of Lindsey's shots were short jumpers, and most of them clanged off the front of the rim. She was also whistled for a couple of offensive fouls, accounting for a couple of her turnovers. Still, she did nail a 10? jumper in the half and found Abby & Emily Waner for threes. Lindsey forced things a bit less in the second half, concentrating on defense and passing. She had 2 quick assists to Gay and Smith in transition, one of them sparked by her steal. She forced 2 jump balls and finished a couple of drives later in the half. Not a sensational game by her standards, but she didn?t force what wasn't there as the Hoos weren't allowing many open looks. Lindsey was her usual solid self on defense, taking 2 charges and swiping a Zoll pass out of mid-air.

Emily Waner

Emily Waner

Em was once again the first sub off the bench and had a big impact in the first half. The 2 threes she hit in a two minute span stunned Virginia, and her dish to her sister later in the half put a halt to a Virginia run. Em also ran the point for a bit and played solid defense on Zoll.

Joy Cheek

Joy Cheek

Another fine outing from the increasingly aggressive young post. One of the biggest keys to handling Littles in this game was Cheek's ability to body her up and block her out. Joy scored in transition, with a nifty reverse layup on a cut, and twice on post-ups. What's interesting about watching her develop is seeing her growing more confident on offense but at the same time learning how to limit silly fouls and turnovers. Joy is no longer trying to thread passes into traffic, doesn't put it on the deck unless she's got a clear driving lane, and is learning what her strengths are at this stage of her development. Essentially, her soft touch from the perimeter combined with a taste for physical play makes her a nice fit in the rotation, a player who neatly complements Duke's other strengths.

It was good to see Brit bounce back from a rough outing against UNC. That jumper she hit at the end of the first half was a big one for Duke's momentum. She also played solid defense when so many of Duke's bigs were in foul trouble.

Bridgette wasn't quite the right matchup for Virginia's players and so didn't get much run. I expect her to be used more against the run/jump players from NC State.

KJ played in her first career ACC Tournament game and had a couple of nice hustle plays. She poked the ball away from Kellum and then finished a strong drive.
