The Nutshell Duke got
outrebounded and out-toughed by an inspired NC State club in the ACC
semis, bringing an end to their undefeated season. All year long, Duke
found answers in the face of adversity and in high-pressure situations,
but several critical errors down the stretch doomed them to their first
loss. Duke's frontline lost the battle to State's imposing duo of
Khadijah Whittington and 6-7 Gillian Goring. Whittington got every key
rebound despite struggling with injuries, and Goring was able to
repeatedly slip by Alison Bales for crucial scores. The Pack swarmed
Lindsey Harding, holding her to just 3-13 shooting from the floor. NC
State dominated all of the hustle stats: 15-4 in second-chance points,
19-16 in points off turnovers. The Pack hit tough pull-up jumpers all
game long and sank crucial foul shots down the stretch. Only Abby Waner
was effective on offense for Duke, scoring 17 points and nailing 5 threes.
The biggest disappointment for Duke was their second-half defense,
allowing the Pack to shoot 52% from the floor and forcing just 4
turnovers. Duke will now have to wait a week to learn their seeding fate,
though given Tennessee's loss in the SEC semis Duke should retain their #1
overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Editor's Note:
