The Nutshell:
Duke was never in any real danger in their ACC road opener, but
the Devils had their least impressive defensive effort of the year. The Hokies
had 27 points in the first half and 54 for the game--both highs for the season
for Duke. Duke gave up 43 points to the only three decent players on VPI's
squad, contrary to their usual defensive goals. Duke won the game because of
their transition game (32-4 edge) and some timely three point shooting. Three
straight threes by the Waner sisters broke open a tight game in the first half
and another burst put Duke up by 20 early in the second half. The Hokies made
a bit of a run, but Duke finished up the game on a 23-5 run. Lindsey Harding
and Abby Waner had 20 points apiece, but Wanisha Smith's 14 first half points
and the play of the bench made the difference.
