Alison Bales

Alison Bales

No two ways about it: Bales was outplayed by Diawara at both ends. Other than a nice headfake that led to a drive in the second half and an early score in the first half, Bales was not much of a scoring threat. She did have 5 blocks and several other altered shots, but getting into foul trouble seemed to throw off her entire game. Ali should have plenty of opportunities to score against a small Georgia Tech team.

Carrem Gay

Carrem Gay

Carrem also picked up a couple of first half fouls and was no threat to score. In the second half, Carrem was in the right place at the right time. Gay hit two 15' jumpers, drove in for a score, finished in transition, and finished a three point play. Her ability to jump into passing lanes made her a terror on defense, as VPI couldn't keep up with her quickness.

Wanisha Smith

Wanisha Smith

Nish truly held the team together in the first half, hitting a big-time three with a hand in her face, getting to the foul line 5 times and scoring on three drives. It was a tribute to her commitment to attacking the basket this year. Smith did cough up the ball a few times in the second half, but she did lead the team in assists and carried the team offensively when the young players were looking for leadership.

Abby Waner

25 20 9-16 2-6 0-0 2 1-3-4 1 3 1 2
Abby Waner

Abby's two threes in the first half and 3 assists were key plays, but it was her 7-11 shooting in the second half that blew away the Hokies. Her scoring came almost exclusively off the dribble, but it was her ability to put herself in position for those drives that was impressive. There was one play in the second half where she blocked a shot, tapped the rebound to Smith and immediately flew down the court, receiving the return pass for a score. Her ability to slip by the defense and finish with contact is what has made her such an effective & consistent scorer this year.

Lindsey Harding

24 20 7-12 0-2 6-7 5 2-2-4 0 2 2 3
Lindsey Harding

In just 24 minutes, Harding dominated at both ends of the floor. Like Waner, she did most of her damage off the dribble, with a couple of jumpers thrown in. After sitting out much of the first half, she was amazing in the second--12 points and 4 assists. Laura Haskins was simply no match for Harding's experience, quickness and aggressiveness.

Bridgette Mitchell

Bridgette Mitchell

Bridgette was very effective in the first half, scoring on a post-up and a stickback. In the second half, she was a bit wild with her shot attempts but was still effective on the boards.

Emily Waner

22 3 1-4 1-3 0-1 2 0-2-2 0 1 0 0
Emily Waner

Emily's numbers seem modest, but the three she hit in the first half was a huge momentum-swinger. She also did a nice job of handling the ball when A.Waner and Harding went out of the game. More and more, she's settling into the Jess Foley role for the team--handle the ball, push the tempo, and hit the occasional shot.

Joy Cheek

17 4 0-3 0-0 4-4 0 3-6-9 1 0 3 3
Joy Cheek

When Bales and Gay went out, Cheek stepped in and played fine defense, along with sweeping the boards. Joy kept things simple--post up, block out, hold her ground on defense. That approach slowed Tech down and kept them off the foul line. She blocked a shot in the first half and pushed it out to Emily Waner, who found Abby for the first of 3 straight threes. That play proved to be a huge-difference maker, and her 4 clutch foul shots toward the end of the half not only held the fort in the absence of the veterans, they were huge positive contributions.

Brittany sank a three with that beautiful form of hers, but did cough the ball a few times.

KJ got in for just a short while, and missed a shot.
