Alison Bales

The good news is that Alison got her 10 shots in this game, including a nifty dribble-drive for a score that should show doubters that a) Ali is a basketball player and b) the knee is fine. The bad news was that Goring kept her off the offensive boards, for the most part solidly competing for inside position. Ali did have her usual solid numbers otherwise, blocking State's bigs three times in the second half.

Carrem Gay

TOT 21 7 3-6 0-0 1-2 0 5-4-9 0 1 2 3
Carrem Gay

Carrem did a great job of containing Whittington, outrebounding her by really turning it up in the second stanza, and holding her to 3-9 shooting. That's two consecutive games where she's played against athletic forwards and held her own. Averaging almost a rebound a minute in the second half was a spectacular defensive performance.

Wanisha Smith

Wanisha Smith

Nish also really picked up her game in the second half - in the first 3:00 of the half she made a steal leading to a fast break layup for Carrem, drained two free throws, and dished out back-to-back assists to Abby Waner. Then, after State called a time out and got a hoop, she drained a 3 to put Duke up 13.

Abby Waner

MIN PTS FG 3FG FT A O-D-REB BLK STL TO PF
1st 13 3 1-5 0-3 1-2 1 1-0-1 0 1 3 1
TOT 27 7 3-10 0-4 3-4 5 1-6-7 0 1 4 1
Abby Waner

Like many Duke players in their first trip to Reynolds, Abby had a shaky first half, hitting just 1 shot and and coughing the ball up 3 times. Like the rest of her teammates, she was much more active and crashed the boards with greater ease in the second half, keying the break and finding the open player. This was a key for Duke--running more and finding open teammates, resulting in a night of extraordinarily balanced scoring.

Lindsey Harding

TOT 28 10 5-10 0-0 0-0 1 1-3-4 0 0 1 2
Lindsey Harding

Lindsey scored mostly on jumpers in this game, but her real accomplishment came on defense: holding State sniper Shayla Fields to 2-10 shooting and 3 turnovers.

Emily Waner

TOT 21 8 3-6 2-5 0-0 0 2-1-3 0 1 0 1
Emily Waner

Em scored 5 of Duke's first 15 points, which was important since Duke was having trouble scoring. Her main role is to provide some scoring punch off the bench, and she's doing that more and more consistently. But don't overlook the 2 offensive rebounds in the first half, which gave Duke second looks at the basket.

Bridgette Mitchell

TOT 11 4 1-3 0-0 0-0 0 0-3-3 0 2 0 1
Bridgette Mitchell

Bridgette didn't play a ton of minutes in this game, but her first half minutes came during a critical stretch - her steals, a key basket, and presence on the boards basket helped keep State from building any significant lead.

Joy Cheek

TOT 16 0 0-4 0-0 0-0 0 2-2-4 0 1 0 2
Joy Cheek

Joy continues to struggle to score against bigger opponents. While she went after rebounds, her shots just didn't drop through the Reynolds rims.

Brittany Mitch

Brittany Mitch

Coach G's message to her bench has always been: Make me want to play you. If you want to break out of your role, there's always been a defined series of steps one needs to take to do it. Now, Mitch came into the season hyped as someone who would get a lot of minutes at a lot of different spots. Her versatility meant that she'd be able to be an effective shooter, ball-handler, and high-post forward. The problem is that she's been nothing but tentative: passing up open shots, dribbling aimlessly, and generally looking uncomfortable. After the Maryland game, Brit was looking especially glum, since she didn't even make it into the game. Coach G talked to her afterwards, encouraging her to be aggressive. With Duke down by four, Brit used her length and size to get open shots, take opponents off the dribble and pick up steals, averaging more than a point a minute in her first half stint. Duke's depth is such that they could use eight or nine players on a regular basis. If you look at how far Emily has come since the beginning of the year, it's clear that there's room in Coach G's system for players to get more minutes. However, against top foes her rotation typically shrinks by a player or two, so it remains to be seen if this performance will have a chance to carry over against Tennessee on Monday.
