The 2nd Half
Duke missed their first 3 shots of the second half and had a turnover, but VPI
could only come up with a single basket in response. The Devils responded with
8 straight points. Waner went baseline and flipped in a pretty reverse layup.
Smith stole the ball and started a fast break that Gay finished. Waner stole
the ball for a layup, and a Gay steal led to an easy transition basket for
Harding. Thanks to some aggressive defensive play, Duke broke out to a 20
point lead.
The Devils couldn't extend the lead, with only a Bales foul shot and a Waner
cut over the next couple of minutes. VPI pulled within 17, but an 11-6 Duke
run gave them a 21 point lead with ten minutes left. Harding scored 5 of those
points on a three point play and a short jumper. Four missed shots and 2
turnovers from Duke later, VPI had 8 points in just two minutes. Duke got
serious with a 23-2 run to finish off the Hokies. Harding, Waner and Gay had
18 of those points, mostly in transition. By this point, the Hokies had run
out of steam and couldn't keep up with a Duke team that snapped into sharp
focus. Harding and A.Waner combined for 26 points in the second half, while
Gay scored all 11 of her points. The bench chipped in with 16 points and 20
rebounds. This game is a lesson in the intensity needed on the road in the
ACC; while Duke could get away with playing hard in spurts here, that won't be
the case against more talented teams.
